Organic and Polymer Postdoctoral Fellow

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Berkeley, California, US
Full-time

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Materials Science Division (MSD) has an opening for an Organic and Polymer Postdoctoral Fellow to join a dynamic research team under the leadership of Dr.

Brett Helms. Our cross-disciplinary program focuses on the development of sustainable polymers with closed-loop materials lifecycles.

These innovative polymers are designed to be infinitely recyclable, helping to combat the environmental challenges posed by single-use plastics and advancing our transition to a circular economy.

Check all associated application documentation thoroughly before clicking on the apply button at the bottom of this description.

In this exciting role, you will lead the synthetic development of novel, infinitely recyclable polymers (e.g., polydiketoenamines, PDKs).

Your work will be crucial in establishing the design rules that underpin sustainable plastics manufacturing, performance, and recycling.

You will collaborate closely with researchers across the Materials Sciences Division, the Molecular Foundry, and the Advanced Light Source, contributing to groundbreaking advancements in sustainable materials.

What You Will Do :

  • Drive the organic and polymer synthesis efforts, bringing depth in technical expertise to the development of recyclable polymers.
  • Investigate structure reactivity property relationships to guide the design and application of these novel materials.
  • Carry out polymer processing and thermomechanical characterization (e.g., DSC, TGA, DMA, Instron, rheometry).
  • Contribute to and promote a robust and inclusive safety culture within the research team.
  • Maintain detailed, accurate records of all research activities and results.
  • Publish your findings in peer-reviewed journals and contribute to scientific research papers, program reports, and review articles.
  • Present your work at scientific conferences and meetings, effectively communicating with diverse technical audiences.
  • Collaborate with and mentor junior researchers, helping the team meet program milestones on schedule.

What is Required :

  • Ph.D. in organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, materials science and engineering, or chemical engineering.
  • Proven excellence in synthetic or physical organic chemistry.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in the characterization of organic and polymeric materials.
  • Proficiency in polymer processing and related techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate on research projects and engage effectively with a broad range of colleagues.
  • Ability to communicate complex scientific concepts clearly and eloquently to audiences with diverse technical backgrounds.
  • Experience in preparing and handling scientific manuscripts, reports, and research posters.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desired Qualifications :

Ability to guide and collaborate with / train junior researchers.

Notes :

This is a full-time, 2-year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

The monthly salary range for this position is $5,562.00 - $6,670.00 and is expected to start at $5,562.00 / mo or above.

Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and / or related research experience.

This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position.

Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

Work will be primarily performed at : Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
