Job Summary :
Responsible for providing clinical nutrition services, including nutrition assessment, malnutrition severity assessment with nutrition-focused physical exam, insertion of nasal or oral feeding tubes using CORTRAK electromagnetic device technology and provide ongoing reliability and safety checks associated with feeding tube use, insertion of nasal bridle for feeding tube securement, modified diet formulation, self-management training and nutrition intervention to patients.
Ensures patient satisfaction, quality care, regulatory agency compliance, and good public relations are achieved through the safe and efficient use of resources and evidence-based practice.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities :
The following is a summary of the major functions of this individual's job. He or she may perform other duties, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below, and specific functions may change from time to time.
1. Assesses patient nutritional status.
2. Performs Nutrition Focused Physical Exam as part of Malnutrition Severity Assessment.
3. Determines and recommends or implements appropriate medical nutrition therapy as per the hospital’s Dietitian Privileges policy.
4. Inserts nasal or oral feeding tubes using CORTRAK electromagnetic device technology and provide ongoing reliability and safety checks associated with feeding tube use for adults.
5. Educates / instructs patients and patient’s families regarding diet according to
age specific guidelines.
6. Documents interventions and outcomes in electronic medical record, including those specific to Cortrak feeding tube placement and tube related reliability and safety checks and nasal bridle placement.
7. Communicates patient specific food request / therapeutic diet needs to Patient Nutrition Clerk staff for their meal service records.
8. Responds to Patient Nutrition Clerks needs concerning patient nutrition care.
9. Orients, mentors and trains staff as applicable.
10. Coordinates care with other health disciplines.
11. Plans regular and modified menus based on current diet manual as needed.
12. Completes continuing education requirements for Kentucky state licensure and Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) certification requirements.
13. Visits inpatients to help ensure meal satisfaction as assigned.
14. Completes annual required hospital computer based training modules, job competency assessments, employee health requirements, and annual Cortrak feeding tube placement and nasal bridle competency assessments.
15. Attends mandatory in-services and other educational / departmental programs as required.
16. Maintains a professional appearance per hospital dress code policy and makes sure identification is always at eye level.
17. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education, Training and Experience Required :
Current registration or registration-eligible with the Commission on Dietetic Registration. Those registration-eligible must become registered within 4 months of date of hire.
Licensed Dietitian in Kentucky or licensed-eligible after receiving CDR registration. Those licensed-eligible must become licensed in KY within 4 months after receiving CDR registration.
One year work experience as a registered dietitian preferred.
Competent in adult Cortrak feeding tube placement or completion of on-the job training / competency within 6 months of date of hire for those responsible for adult care.
