JOB SUMMARY :
Primarily responsible for preparing patients for catheterization procedures and directly assisting the attending physicians during procedures.
Will be responsible for patient hemodynamic monitoring, recording, and report generating when not scrubbed in to a procedure.
Assists in the care and stocking of instruments, equipment, and supplies. Assists in the transportation of patients and with housekeeping duties to maintain cleanliness of the department.
Must comply with hospital and department policies and procedures and work with supervisors to meet DNV, JCAHO and hospital standards.
This position may have scribing responsibilities.
JOB SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Demonstrates knowledge of procedures, preparing for procedures, and identifying supplies and equipment needed for procedures.
- Performs proper scrub and draping techniques.
- Is attentive and anticipates needs of the physician for instruments, catheters, wires and other supplies according to technique, procedure, and special requirements.
- Demonstrates knowledge of Infection Control and Universal Precautions for proper handling of blood and bodily fluids.
- Performs proper instrument, sponge, and sharps counts, and reports discrepancies accordingly.
- Maintains aseptic, sterile environment on procedure drape and back table.
- Competent in clinical and technical skills specific to the Cardiac Cath Lab.
- Observes assigned work hours, is readily available when On-Call and respects and abides by hospital policy on attendance and tardiness.
- Performs and maintains correct patient ECG lead placement during cases.
- Properly performs hemodynamic pressure monitoring, recording, and data collection in an accurate and timely manner.
- Assists in maintaining proper function of the hemodynamic equipment and reports any malfunctions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
High school graduate or GED.
Must be competent in maintaining sterile technique.
General knowledge of hemodynamic waveforms and pressures and experience in cardiac catheterization or special procedures is preferred.
REQUIRED LICENSURES / CERTIFICATIONS / REGISTRATIONS :
Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is required upon employment. Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) is preferred.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES :
Able to work under stressful situations. Demonstrates technical competency, policy and procedure compliance, and organizational behavior.
Ability to maintain professional working relationships and communicate effectively with all hospital and medical team members.
INTERACTION WITH OTHER DEPARTMENTS AND OTHER RELATIONSHIPS :
Close relationships with Central Supply, Sterile Processing, and Cath Lab Materials Management. This position interacts with almost all areas of the hospital.
These areas include but are not limited to OPS, all ICU’s, Pediatrics, Physicians, Nursing, Transportation, Housekeeping, Chemistry, Patient Services, and Volunteers.
The person in this position must be able to communicate effectively and respectfully with all.
PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES :
Work is of moderate demand. Standing and sitting a great deal of time. Required to wear an 8 to 10 pound apron during procedures.
Lifting of instruments and patients (with assistance) and operation of necessary equipment. Near visual acuity and adequate hand / eye coordination required.
Must be able to hear accurately and verbally communicate with patients, physicians, and staff.
ENVIRONMENTAL / WORKING CONDITIONS :
Indoor working conditions. Highly stressful fast paced environment. The work area is a high-risk area for exposure to blood borne pathogens.
Hours of duty may be long and irregular to accommodate department needs and on-call requirements. Also see physical capabilities.
