Job Description : POSITION SUMMARY

POSITION SUMMARY

The Illinois College of Osteopathic Medicine(proposed) seeks an accomplished physician, educator, and leader to serve as the founding Chair of the Department of Primary Care and Medicine.

Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs, the Chair will provide leadership and strategic direction for the Department, oversee and manage departmental operations and administration, recruit and oversee the evaluation, mentoring, and development of departmental faculty, and represent the Department's interests at the College and University levels.

The Department Chair will lead an interdisciplinary team of physician educators in developing and delivering an innovative osteopathic medical curriculum encompassing internal medicine, family medicine, critical care, emergency medicine, pediatrics, and related medical specialties.

The successful candidate will establish the Department's goals and objectives, manage faculty and staff, oversee the Department's contributions to the curriculum, develop internal and external partnerships, manage budgets and resources, and ensure compliance with relevant standards and regulations.

The Chair will be responsible for advancing osteopathic excellence through innovative education, research, and clinical partnerships across the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine curriculum.

Applicants are expected to merit the rank of associate or full professor.

The position is based on the Chicago, IL campus, with relocation assistance available for eligible candidates.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

Department Vision and Priorities

As Chair, you will establish, articulate and implement the vision for the Department’s education, research and clinical service within primary care and internal medicine specialties at the College.

Top priorities include :

  • Fostering the College’s vision, mission, values, goals, and agenda within the department and align the department’s focus and activities with the College's strategic priorities
  • Working across interdisciplinary teams to develop curriculum integrating osteopathic principles across all learning modalities : classroom and lab instruction, simulation (working with the Associate Dean of Simulation), ambulatory care, inpatient service
  • Recruiting and developing talented physician educators with exemplary teaching, scholarship and practitioner capabilities
  • Securing diverse affiliations with clinics, hospitals and healthcare centers to provide robust clinical training environments (working when necessary with the Office of Clinical Affairs).
  • Fostering passion for lifelong learning and commitment to underserved communities among trainees
  • Building partnerships to increase research capacity and external funding
  • Achieving early programmatic accreditation milestones and helping prepare for COCA site visits

Education Leadership

As Chair you will provide vision, oversight and direction for the Department’s teaching and instruction, including :

  • Partnering with the Office of Academic Affairs to provide oversight of curriculum design, delivery, and evaluation to promote program quality, integrity, and continuous quality improvement
  • Coordinating teaching assignments for Departmental faculty
  • Developing and implementing longitudinal assessment plans from early clinical exposure through core rotations
  • Promoting the adoption of innovative, evidence-based instructional methods and technologies
  • Participate in the development and delivery of the curriculum and the assessment of student learning
  • Supporting development of faculty teaching skills as medical educators and osteopathic role models
  • Partnering with stakeholders to facilitate student advising and ensure opportunities for student mentoring, scholarly activity and professional growth
  • Ensuring programs meet evolving accreditation and regulatory requirements

Strategic Growth & Innovation

The Chair will build and advance Department infrastructure to meet ambitious institutional goals, including :

  • Recruiting and developing exceptional faculty to deliver the curriculum
  • Establishing leadership structure, policies and processes
  • Diversifying sources of financial support through partnerships, contracts, grants and philanthropy
  • Promoting faculty scholarship through mentoring, infrastructure and career development
  • Fostering affiliations with teaching hospitals, health centers and medical groups
  • Developing continuing professional development offerings

Institutional Collaboration

As a member of medical school leadership, the Chair will help shape college initiatives by :

  • Actively participating in school governance, operations and accreditation
  • Developing synergies with other department chairs and administrators
  • Implementing strategic goals and upholding osteopathic principles
  • Advocating for Department priorities and emerging needs

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Terminal degree (DO / MD) in requisite area of expertise
  • Board certified with clinical expertise in internal medicine, primary care or associated sub-specialties
  • 10+ years academic medicine experience with progressive leadership
  • Subject matter expertise relevant to department focus
  • Experience in medical education with progressive leadership experience
  • Subject matter expertise in evidence-based osteopathic practice

IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with strategic planning, faculty development, curriculum design, and people management
  • Record of effective departmental or program leadership at the graduate or medical education level
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects, budgets, and teams
  • Scholarly portfolio and proven external funding record
  • Demonstrated teaching excellence
  • Excellent people management and consensus-building skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Creative problem-solving skills with a solutions-oriented mindset
  • Passion for the osteopathic philosophy and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion

Compensation & Benefits

This opportunity is budgeted at $$250,000-$300,00 base compensation. Additional compensation factors may impact total compensation.
