Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Manager of Air Inspection Division and the Deputy Director, conducts on-site preliminary and comprehensive environmental engineering pollution inspections of major industrial processes and commercial enterprises.

Ensures enforcement and compliance of Federal, State and County environmental protection laws.Examines operational performance of industrial process, combustion and incineration equipment as to emitting atmospheric pollutants.

Performs complex engineering calculations relevant to industrial and commercial emissions; analyzes engineering data relevant to industrial process, combustion, and incineration impact upon the environment.

Makes technical diagrams, drawings, and sketches of industrial process, combustion, incineration, and control equipment layouts.

Cites pollution violators and provides technical environmental assistance to the general public. Assists with the training of new environmental control engineer personnel relative to the policies and procedures of the department.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering; Industrial Technology; Public Health;

Environmental Planning; Environmental Policy; Environmental Health; Environmental Management; Science; or Natural Resources.

  • Four (4) years’ full-time professional work experience implementing environmental programs, environmental pollution control engineering programs or environmental compliance inspection programs.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and current proof of insurance.

This position is considered a safety-sensitive position. Candidates who are selected to fill safety-sensitive positions must pass a required drug test as part of the pre-employment background check process.

Degrees awarded outside of the United States with the exception of those awarded in one of the United States territories and Canada, must be credentialed by the World Education Services (WES), Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) or a National Association of Credential Evaluation (NACES) member organization.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS Ability to understand, apply and communicate Federal, State, and County laws legislating environmental protection regulations.

Ability to read and interpret applicable technical diagrams, drawings, and sketches of industrial processes, combustion, incineration, and related control equipment layouts.

Ability to apply engineering principles and practices to analyze blueprints and specifications of industrial and commercial enterprises.

Skill in the use of a handheld scientific (mathematical) calculator; skill in the use of computer equipment.

Ability to interpret appropriate reference material to extract necessary formulas and information to calculate emission rates relevant to environmental pollution control.

Skill in the operation of various portable monitors and measurement devices and interpret instrument readings in regards to pollution control.

Ability to make technical diagrams, drawings, and sketches by hand of industrial process, combustion, incineration, and related control equipment layouts.

Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, with the general public respective to the mandates of Federal, State, and County Environmental Protection laws.

Ability to prepare detailed analytical written reports relative to environmental engineering pollution inspections.
