Position Description

Overview : The Fassett laboratory at the UCSF-Parnassus Campus is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic recent college graduate to join our team as a junior / asst research specialist.

Founded in spring 2023, our growing research group studies T cell biology and allergic inflammation in skin, lungs, and gut.

Your direct supervisor will be Dr. Marlys Fassett, a physician-scientist / dermatologist whose research program spans from in vitro molecular immunology to neuroimmunology to mouse models of inflammatory disease.

Required : The ideal candidate will have completed relevant coursework in neuroscience, immunology or molecular biology.

Preferred : hands-on research experience in immunology.

Key experimental techniques you will be expected to learn and perform with us include : mouse and human tissue processing, flow cytometry, mouse husbandry, and other animal procedures.

Up to 10% of your time will also be dedicated to general lab support such as ordering and receiving of supplies. We also intend to support you as you develop sufficient skills and autonomy to drive an independent research sub-project within the lab.

Depending upon your prior experience and interest, your project may involve experiments that employ immunofluorescence microscopy, analysis of RNA-sequencing data, or development of novel assays to model the relationship between sensory nerves and other skin cell types in vitro.

The Position : Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities.

Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions and may participate in University and Public Service.

Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or equivalent research experience (e.

g., with instrumentation and research equipment, social science research methods, or creative activities). Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess a master's degree (or equivalent degree) or a bachelor's degree with three or more years of research experience.

Preference is given to candidates with hands-on experience in flow cytometry, in vitro cell differentiation assays, and / or other core immunology techniques.

Candidates must meet all of the required qualifications at the time of appointment. Candidate's CV must state qualifications (or if pending) upon submission.

Timing : Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
