General Summary :

This position is for a physician assistant supporting Marin Health Vascular Surgery. The position is anticipated to be primarily outpatient with hospital and ER coverage.

It will be primarily located in Greenbrae but may include satellite offices in Novato, Santa Rosa, and Sonoma. The physician assistant will work with multiple attending physicians and other physician assistants;

and the role will evolve with growth of the program.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities :

General Clinical Duties

Work with the physicians / surgeons / colleagues and other clinical and administrative staff to ensure efficient patient management based on accepted practice, including but not limited to, performing histories and physicals, pre-operative planning / coordinating with anesthesia / outside providers and PCPs as applicable, responding to change in patient status, providing needed prescriptions / evaluations / referral / treatments as permitted under their delegation of services agreement.

Order home health services and DME, DMV evaluations, referrals, consultations, PT, and radiographic or diagnostic requests.

Must also be able to provide patient education, and arrange follow-up appointments.

  • Perform and direct wound care
  • Perform minor procedures including but not limited to sclerotherapy, wound debridement and removal of tunneled dialysis catheter.
  • Coordinate perioperative patient care including the following :
  • Perform pre-operative history and physical examinations.
  • Facilitate patient education.
  • Initiate pre-and-post-operative orders (subject to authorization / co-signature of responsible physician).
  • Remove sutures, staples, and drains; change dressings and perform appropriate wound care.
  • Assess patients based on standardized protocols.
  • Manage pre-operative, post-operative and pain medication management.
  • Respond to My Chart and In-Basket messages in a timely manner, no later than 24 hours.
  • Evaluate, assess and create a documented plan of treatment per patient’s presenting HPI or established plan of care under the collaboration / supervision of an attending physician.
  • Answer clinically relevant patient medical advice calls, questions during bedside communications and coordination with health care professionals, patients and their families as necessary.
  • Independently or in a shared visit model, evaluate routine, acute, critical, new patients, or specialty consultations when needed and discuss with attending and staff as appropriate.
  • Independently or in collaboration with attending physician, interpret and act upon tests, procedures, and radiographic studies.
  • Assist in formulating and implementing protocols to improve efficiency in the office.
  • Effectively communicate with family or patients in person, telephone and / or other electronic modalities in a timely manner.
  • Initiate consultations and monitor scheduling of patients for special tests.
  • Consult with attending physician as needed, when patient requests it, or if the patient’s problem is beyond his / her scope of experience and fund of knowledge.
  • May be expected to do urgent inpatient or emergency room consults and make rounds on in-hospital patients, including entering notes / orders in chart, which will be countersigned by the physician.
  • Close all encounters within 48 hours in Apex.
  • Participate in clinical research and provide staff education
  • Maintain Vascular Quality Initiative database
  • Perform other duties as set in the Scope and Setting of Practice

Other Requirements & Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Maintain open communication channels with all members of the health care team.
  • Communicate well with patients and families, staff and referring clinicians.
  • Be knowledgeable about and adherent to all applicable Medical Center and department specific infection control, health and safety policies and procedures, including annual safety training.
  • Maintain a clean, and functional work space in compliance with all patient privacy regulations.
  • Must be able to document competent performance of the skills required to perform in the role described.

Qualifications : Education :

Education :

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
  • Completion of a surgical residency preferred.

Licenses / Certifications :

  • Must be certified by the National Commission on Certification and licensed in the State of California
  • Must hold current national board certification by first day of work and maintain.
  • Must hold an active and current California Physician Assistant License (PA)
  • Must hold valid California driver’s license
  • Must hold an active DEA license (or transferable to California) as required by the clinical specialty.
  • Must be eligible for payer enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid.
  • BLS and ACLS Certification (American Heart Association) required.

Experience :

  • 2 - 5 years of PA experience preferred, but may consider motivated new grad.
  • Prior experience in wound care and / or minor office-based procedures also preferred.
