Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
Department : 29i Medical
Location : Brooklyn, Queens & Long Island
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION : To provide fully integrated behavioral health medical services to children / youth in child welfare system.
REPORTS TO : Director of Medical / 29i
SUPERVISES : Collaborates with Medical and Clinical Teams
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Diagnosis
- Interview patients about symptoms and complaints and determine whether a psychiatric disorder has a physiological or emotional basis.
- Compile and evaluate medical history and mental health findings.
- Screen patients for physical illness and analyze explanations for psychiatric illness, such as developmental issues, family dysfunction, genetics, neurological trauma or social or cultural problems.
- Assessment of risk factors for mental illness and broader wellness evaluations
Treatment
- Conduct individual, group or family counseling sessions, and write prescriptions for psychotropic medications under the supervision of psychiatrists and when state regulations allow.
- Intervene with therapy or medication during mental crisis.
- Manage caseload and documentation.
- Facilitate communication between psychiatric services, programs and care givers.
- Initiate, monitor and recommend medications and treatment changes.
Collaboration
- Track patient progress and report their results to doctors, including psychiatrists and psychologists. · Work with other medical professionals to evaluate or change treatment plans.
- Educate patients’ families about mental illness, treatment and prevention.
