The College of Engineering (CoE) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks an experienced IT leader to provide strategic vision and overall leadership in IT services, facilities, and initiatives within the college.
The primary role for the Director of IT is to coordinate and enhance the information technology services and infrastructure of the CoE and its units.
In addition, this individual will develop and implement an information technology strategic plan for CoE.
The CoE Director of IT will be a member of the college leadership team and will represent the college in campus-level discussions.
They will report to the CoE Executive Associate Dean and advise, formulate and implement policies related to the management of the college's information technology needs and supporting the college's 8 departments.
They will also work closely with the Dean, associate deans, department chairs and college faculty, staff and students to align information technology services, including Engineering Computing Labs / Workstations, with the mission and strategic goals of CoE, its units, and with identified academic, research and business needs.
In carrying out these responsibilities, the Director of IT must ensure that the infrastructure and applications provide an environment that is cost-effective and responsive to student, staff, and faculty needs and addresses the unique research and teaching missions of our college along with building cooperative relations with our IT partners on campus.
Importantly, the Director of IT will develop and implement data security policies and guidelines for CoE in addition to those from research sponsors.
The successful candidate will have an appreciation for changing external and internal IT landscapes, and enjoy leading and collaborating within an interdisciplinary operational structure.
They will possess a leadership toolkit that enables them to nurture positive work environments; think strategically; communicate with diverse stakeholders;
develop effective partnerships; and deliver results. Additionally, they will understand the unique importance of information technology in supporting the research, teaching, outreach, advising, and administration mission of a public research university, including the impact of IT infrastructure on accessibility in higher education.
The person in this role will oversee a team of IT professionals within CoE working in cybersecurity, research and educational computing, computer and network support services, and computer lab support.
Responsibilities :
- 20% Directs strategic information technology planning initiatives and establishes divisional objectives to ensure appropriate use of financial, administrative, staffing resources, and alignment with the strategic plan
- 10% Develops operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and divisional objectives
- 15% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and / or approving hours worked of at least 2.

- 5% Develops and audits the budget
- 20% Serves as the divisional IT liaison representing the division's interests to internal and external stakeholders
- 10% Advises institutional or divisional leadership on information technology operations and business models
- 5% May perform manager functions through subordinate managers
- 5% Represent CoE by participating in campus, state and national organizations
- 5% Manage the assessment, design, implementation, and ongoing building and maintenance projects to address computing, risk, and security needs
- 5% Envision, plan, and implement information technologies to serve CoE's research, teaching, and outreach management needs

- Minimum five years required, seven years preferred, of IT work experience with increasing responsibility for IT strategy, facilities, services, and / or operations.
- Minimum three years supervisory experience required, five years preferred. Demonstrated capacity to develop the talents and expertise of staff.
Proven ability to recruit and retain well-qualified, high-performing professionals and empower them to succeed.
- Experience leading teams, building positive, collaborative working relationships, and moving initiatives forward with diverse groups of stakeholders and partners.
- Project Management experience
Preferred :
- Formal training in the field of Technology Management
- Working knowledge of technologies leveraged by institutions of higher education in support of education, research, outreach, advising, and / or administration.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and utilizes data in communication.
- Experience crafting and implementing policy and demonstrating compliance with policies.
