Job Description :

The Division of Supportive and Acute Care Services in the Department of Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center seeks to recruit an exceptional academic physician and leader to serve as the Chief of the Rapid Diagnosis, Early Detection and Risk Reduction (RaDaR) Service.

The Division of Supportive and Acute Care services is comprised of four services including RaDaR, Hospital Medicine, Supportive Care and Emergency Care Services that support patients across the cancer continuum.

The newly named service combines a Section of Geriatrics (currently four geriatricians and two geriatric nurse practitioners) with a Section of General Internal Medicine (currently five general internists and one family medicine physician).

The overall aim is to support the non-oncologic medical management of people before, during, and after a diagnosis of cancer so that they may live well.

The Service Chief will report to the Head of the Division of Supportive and Acute Care Services and will have programmatic oversight and responsibility for the Service and faculty.

The Service Chief will work to shape the strategic and programmatic priorities for the Service. S / he will oversee the clinical operations, talent acquisition and retention, research, philanthropy, professional development, mentorship, and teaching.

Faculty members provide medical care to persons across the lifespan who are at risk for or living with cancer or its complications in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.

The Service Chief support recruitment and professional development of faculty and development of programs that align with MSK’s strategic plan.

The clinical, research and teaching mission of the RaDaR service is aligned around three workstreams :

1. Early Detection and Diagnosis (DETECT) : Responsibilities include oversight and direction of efficient cancer screening in high-risk populations including individuals with a cancer history, genetic risk or pre-malignant condition.

This also includes coordination of rapid diagnostic evaluations for individuals with suspected but unconfirmed cancer diagnosis.

2. Risk Reduction (PREPARE) : Responsibilities include mitigation of risk for individuals whose medical histories or age may complicate cancer treatment.

This includes peri-operative management and participation in treatment decision making based on a whole person perspective.

In particular, geriatricians on the service support patients in partnership with their surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists to formulate treatment plans that minimize risk and align with patients’ goals.

3. Survivorship (THRIVE) : Responsibilities include supporting cancers in the survivorship phase who have complex medical needs.

Most cancer survivors continue follow-up with their primary service (e.g., bone marrow transplant) or transition to primary care physicians in their local communities.

However, select patients such as

adult survivors of pediatric cancer can confront lifelong complex medical needs and benefit from management by internists with special expertise in cancer survivorship.

The Rapid Diagnosis, Early Detection and Risk Reduction Service faculty partner with and support other physicians spanning multiple services in the Department of Medicine as well as other Departments at MSK including Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Psychiatry, Neurology, Anesthesia, Radiology, and Pathology, as well as with colleagues from Nursing and Social Work.

Faculty have expertise in coordination and oversight of cancer screening, strategic diagnostic evaluations, risk mitigation around cancer treatment including geriatric assessment and management of multi-morbidity in the ambulatory and inpatient setting.

This includes surveillance of persons at high risk of cancer, workup of persons with suspicion of cancer, medical optimization in older adults and those with multiple chronic conditions, and expertise in the common side effects of treatment, including benign hematology, diabetes management and osteoporosis.

Growth is expected in digital surveillance and blood-based screening and early detection for persons at high risk of cancer.

There are innumerable opportunities for the successful candidate to partner with clinicians and researchers across MSK to investigate new strategies for efficient screening, surveillance, early detection and risk mitigation to reduce the harms of cancer and its treatment.

There is opportunity to grow the research portfolio of this service which might include emphasis on implementation science to mitigate known risks for cancer and the complications that stem from treatment.

Qualified candidates should be physicians with board-certification in geriatrics, internal medicine, or family medicine. The ideal candidate will have :

  • A vision for how the skills and talents of geriatricians and general internists can support MSK’s strategic plan in the realms of clinical care, research, education and community outreach.
  • National recognition as a program leader, educator, and / or a funded program of clinical, translational, or population science research in cancer screening, surveillance, diagnostics, risk mitigation, or survivorship;
  • Expertise in geriatrics, general internal medicine, or family medicine, and a track record that aligns with one or more of the service’s cores workstreams;
  • Eligibility for licensure in New York and New Jersey.

Expected salary range is $375K - $450K for this role.

Physician compensation is based on multiple variables. This range represents annual salary only and does not include supplemental performance-based pay or any
