Job Description

Serve as the lead teacher of an integrated preschool classroom for two- to five-year-old children with and without autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Supported by the preschool’s executive directors, assisted by two assistant teachers, and in consultation with therapists with training in speech language pathology and applied behavior analysis, the lead teacher will help create an inclusive learning environment that enables children with ASD to be productive, socially connected, and emotionally engaged, and provides all students (with or without ASD) with a stimulating learning environment where children are challenged to engage with the world they live in and learn to approach each other with empathy and care.

Experience

Two years of experience teaching young children birth to age five, preferably in an inclusive setting supporting diverse learners

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching students with ASD
  • Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) teaching certificate
  • Master’s degree in the early care / early education field or a master’s degree in early childhood special education

Education

A four-year degree in the early care education field (e.g., bachelor’s degree in 1 early childhood education, 2 child development, or 3 an unrelated field paired with specialized training in early childhood education)

Certification Summary

  • First Aid
  • Valid / Current satisfactory Comprehensive Records Check Determination (must be completed in accordance with DECAL requirements)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of developmentally appropriate classroom procedures for young children birth to age five, including positive behavioral support strategies
  • Conceptual understanding of the GELDS standards and experience using these standards to specify learning outcomes
  • Ability to collaborate with and provide mentorship to assistant teachers
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem solving, and communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and classroom management skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Job Responsibilities

  • Refines and implements a curriculum focused on social interaction and play.
  • Develops and implements accommodations that allow all children to participate in all classroom activities.
  • Provides supervision, mentorship, and assistance to other preschool staff, and participates appropriately in ongoing departmental and institute meetings and training activities.
  • Engages children’s families through classroom volunteer opportunities, parent-teacher conferences, and parent education sessions.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members in an organized and flexible manner, and works effectively with other preschool staff in efforts to refine the classroom curriculum and develop adaptations for individual students.
  • Documents and maintains updated student information in the preschool data management system to record assessments, progress reports, and services provided to meet student objectives.
  • Provides information to the educational support teams regarding students’ educational progress / needs and available school and community services.
  • Assists supervisor and / or manager with development of staff by being available to teammates, acting as a resource to help complete complicated / complex tasks, providing on-the-job training to team, and seeking out opportunities to become actively involved in staff workflow and development.
  • Provides supervisor and / or manager feedback on staff performance, educational needs, and workflow status.
