Assistant Professor of Modern European History

The Department of History at Williams College seeks to make a tenure-track appointment at the rank of assistant professor in Modern European history, to begin during the 2025-26 academic year.

Candidates should be dedicated scholars with a commitment to undergraduate teaching, with a Ph.D. in hand or expected by September 2025.

Applicants whose research focuses on Europe (excluding Russia) in the nineteenth century, with thematic and methodological expertise that complements and extends the strengths of our current faculty, are especially encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will have considerable autonomy in developing the curriculum in their field, with the expectation that they regularly teach a survey course in modern European history.

The standard teaching load at Williams is four courses each year (2-2) plus a January term course every other year. Information about the department and current curriculum can be found at : https : / / history.williams.edu .

The History Department has demonstrated success in developing a diverse faculty, and we are especially interested in candidates from historically underrepresented groups whose scholarship and teaching contribute to the breadth and excellence of the Williams academic community.

In addition, Williams offers faculty participation in the college’s professional development program First3 and in the NCFDD Faculty Success Program, and support through the newly established Rice Center for Teaching.
