Job Description Summary
The Early Childhood Education area in the Department of Human Development and Child Studies (HDCS) at Oakland University invites applications for a tenure-track, faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor or Special Instructor leading to job security, to begin in August 2024.
Responsibilities include teaching, mentoring, and supervising undergraduate and graduate students; advising Ph.D. research;
conducting scholarships in child development, early childhood education, or related field; provide service to the department, school, and university, as well as contribute to Oakland University’s mission for community partnerships and engagement.

The position will be open until filled. Minimum Qualifications
- An earned research doctorate in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Human Development, Developmental Science, Developmental Psychology, or a related field by the time of appointment;
- Evidence of successful teaching in child development related course(s) at undergraduate and / or graduate level;
- Good command of educational technology; experience with online asynchronous and hybrid teaching;
- Evidence of scholarship that compliments the research interests of current faculty;
- Experience working with children ages 0-8 in a classroom setting, early intervention or home visiting;
- Passion for mentoring preservice and inservice teachers, as well as supervising Ph.D.-level research.
- Demonstrated ability to incorporate diversity, educational equity, inclusion, and anti-racist pedagogy into their scholarship, teaching, and service;
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
Special Instructions to Applicants Preferred Qualifications
Two+ years of experience teaching in Infant / Toddler, Pre-Kindergarten, or K-3 classrooms, including inclusive Early Intervention & Early Childhood Special Education programs.
Preferred Qualification for Tenure Track Assistant Professor
Evidence of active and ongoing scholarly activities (peer-reviewed publications and local, national or international research conference presentations in the past five (5) years)

The Early Childhood area offers a B.S. in Early Childhood Education that prepares students for Michigan’s Birth through 3rd grade teaching certification;
and M.Ed and Ph.D. in Early Childhood Education. The B.S. is a combined Early Childhood and Early Childhood Special Education certification.
HDCS oversees the Lowry Center for Early Childhood Education, OU’s lab preschool accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
It serves children from 18 months to prekindergarten. Over 10 different nationalities are represented at Lowry every year.
