Job Summary : The Surgical Technologist (Surgical Tech) in the Labor & Delivery department provides essential support during labor and delivery procedures.
This role involves preparing the operating room, assisting the surgical team, and ensuring a sterile environment for a variety of obstetric procedures.
Key Responsibilities :
- Pre-Operative Duties :
- Prepare and maintain sterile field for deliveries and surgical procedures.
- Assemble and arrange surgical instruments, sutures, and supplies.
- Verify and prepare necessary equipment and ensure its functionality.
- Assisting During Procedures :
- Assist surgeons and obstetricians by passing instruments and supplies during procedures.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and respond promptly.
- Monitor and maintain the sterile field throughout the procedure.
- Post-Operative Duties :
- Assist with the cleanup and disinfection of the operating room.
- Dispose of used instruments and materials following infection control protocols.
- Document surgical counts, specimen handling, and other relevant data.
- Patient Care :
- Prepare patients for surgery, including positioning and draping.
- Communicate effectively with patients and their families, addressing concerns and providing updates as necessary.
- Collaboration and Communication :
- Work closely with obstetricians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure efficient and effective patient care.
- Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to continuous improvement efforts.
- Emergency Response :
- Respond to emergencies promptly, providing assistance as needed during high-risk deliveries and surgical interventions.
Qualifications :
- Education : Completion of a Surgical Technologist program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or an equivalent organization.
- Certification : Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) is preferred.
- Experience : Previous experience in a Labor & Delivery or obstetric surgical setting is highly desirable.
- Skills : Proficiency in surgical instruments, sterilization techniques, and maintaining sterile fields. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
Physical Requirements :
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.
- Capability to lift and move patients and equipment as needed.
- Stamina to work effectively during night shifts and handle high-stress situations.
