Refrigeration Technician

A manufacturing company in Mundelein, IL is looking for a 3rd Shift Refrigeration Technician to support the operation, maintenance, and repair of our industrial ammonia refrigeration systems in a protein manufacturing facility. This position plays a vital role in maintaining proper cooling and freezing processes that ensure food safety, product quality, and smooth facility operations. Working independently during overnight hours, the technician must be ready to respond quickly and effectively to any equipment or system issues.

Responsibilities of Refrigeration Technician

Operate, monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain ammonia refrigeration systems, including compressors, condensers, pumps, evaporators, spiral chillers, spiral freezers, and related controls.
Perform scheduled and preventive maintenance to maximize system uptime and efficiency.
Maintain accurate documentation for EPA compliance, refrigeration logs, and PSM (Process Safety Management) requirements.
Conduct temperature checks and manage control systems to uphold food safety and regulatory standards.
Adjust and fine-tune equipment for optimal energy usage and performance.
Provide refrigeration coverage and emergency response during the shift, including unplanned downtime and urgent repairs.
Order parts and refrigerant, ensuring proper inventory for system reliability.
Communicate regularly with the Maintenance Supervisor and team regarding system status, repairs, and safety issues.
Oversee and assist contractors performing service, repairs, or installations on refrigeration and mechanical systems.
Maintain housekeeping standards in the engine / refrigeration rooms for safety and hygiene.
Follow all GMPs, safety protocols, and lockout / tagout procedures.

Requirements of the Refrigeration Technician

Certificate or degree in Industrial Refrigeration, HVAC, or related technical field.

5–7 years of experience in industrial refrigeration, preferably in food or protein processing.

Strong knowledge of ammonia-based refrigeration systems, including mechanical and electrical components.

Proven ability to troubleshoot and repair complex refrigeration equipment independently.

Physical ability to lift heavy equipment and work in cold or wet environments.

Familiarity with PSM regulations, EPA reporting, and food safety standards (preferred).

3rd shift, DIRECT HIRE

Pay is between $35.00 - $45.00 an hour, willing to pay more based on experience
