Scope of Assignment

Columbia College is seeking a part-time faculty member in the Nursing Assistant Program. The successful candidate will join Columbia College to deliver Nursing Science and Clinical Practice curriculum responsive to student needs, increasing student completion through the accelerated learning model and through implementation of strategies geared to increase student equity.

Minimum Qualifications

Any bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.

At least one-year continuous, full time or its equivalent experience in the designated nursing area within the previous five years as a registered nurse providing direct patient care.

Recent experience may include teaching in the area of nursing.

To be an instructor of a Nurse Assistant Program in the state of California, applicant must currently have an active nursing license as either a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) and

  • Two (2) years of nursing experience
  • One (1) of the two years must be verifiable experience as a licensed nurse providing care and services to chronically ill or elderly patients in an acute care hospital, skilled nursing facility, intermediate care facility, home care, hospice care, or other long-term care setting.

PLUS

  • Must have ONE of the following
  • Verifiable completion of a course in teaching adults; OR
  • Completion of a 240 hour course in Planning, Implementing and Evaluating Educational Programs in Nursing satisfied this requirement.

o Completion of a course approved by the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) or by an accredited educational institution satisfies this requirement.

o A BRN continuing education course certificate used to meet this requirement bust comply with the requirements found in 16 CCR 1450 et seq.

Verifiable One (1) year of experience planning, implementing, and evaluating educational programs in nursing.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL STANDARDS

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in nursing

Education and / or experience in teaching in Nursing at the community college level Current knowledge of Nursing clinical practice

Current understanding of assessment processes for improving student success at the course, program, and degree level.

Competent in new pedagogies, such as accelerated learning, supplemental instruction, on-line or hybrid teaching, and other pedagogies directed at improving student success and student equity.

  • Recent experience working with African American / Black, Hispanic, Native American, and other minoritized students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in the classroom;
  • Experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in Nursing, especially as it relates to the relevancy of Nursing in students' lives, interests, and communities;
  • Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within coursework and the classroom;

Demonstrated knowledge of the Hispanic-Serving designation for institutional, departmental, and instructional practices.

Example of Duties

GENERAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Part of the teaching assignment may be online and in-person class times take place in the afternoon / evening. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to :

Teaching lower division clinical in Nursing

Implement program philosophy, objectives, policies and curriculum.

Supervise student practice of new skills.

Assist students with remedial skills practice as needed and communicate progress to nursing faculty team.

Serve as skills evaluator.

Maintain a comprehensive system of records for students in the clinical setting which may include student evaluations, grade book, clinical grids, competency testing, submission of clinical clearance records, positive attendance records, computer training records, semester checklists, etc.

Assist with coordinating scheduling of pre and post conference meetings.

Provide for orientation of students in the hospital setting.

Assist with program-related activities

Advancing equitable student learning through dedicated, exemplary instruction in accordance with established course outlines.

Informing students of course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance requirements.

Preparing and grading class assignments and examinations and informing students of their academic progress.

Maintaining attendance, scholastic, and other records and submitting them according to published policies and deadlines.

Attending department, division, and college-wide meetings on a regular basis.

Posting and holding sufficient and regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy.

Developing, implementing, and assessing student-learning outcomes for courses and programs and using the results for improvement.

Engaging in data inquiry and self-assessment to develop strategies for student success, persistence, and equity.

Participating in professional development activities, both departmental and collegewide, especially connected to closing disproportionate impact gaps and improving completion goals.

Maintaining current knowledge in the subject matter area and effective teaching / learning strategies to meet the needs of all learning styles.

Maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.

Perform other duties as assigned
