Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas (VLS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping low-income individuals access the civil justice system by providing free legal advice and representation from volunteer attorneys.
Founded in May 1981, VLS offers various programs to serve over 5,000 people annually, including legal advice clinics and partnerships with law firms and nonprofits.
Our staff supports a network of over 350 volunteer attorneys who contribute their time and legal expertise to make a difference in the community.
Role Description
This is a full-time hybrid role for a Family Law Staff Attorney at Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas. The staff attorney will work with pro bono attorneys and staff to provide legal assistance to eligible clients and assist with community outreach and education.
The full-time staff attorney will focus primarily on family law cases, including divorce, child custody and support. The role is primarily located in the Austin, Texas Metropolitan Area, with flexibility for some remote work.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree and bar admission in Texas
- Minimum of 3 years of Experience in Family Law or Litigation (preferably Public Interest)
- Demonstrated Commitment to Pro Bono Legal Services
- Legal Advice, Research, and Negotiation skills
- Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications of Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel, as well as experience using legal case management databases
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working with low-income or vulnerable populations
- Spanish proficiency
- Pro Bono experience
- Non-profit organization work experience
- Training in holistic and trauma-informed advocacy representation
