Job Summary
The Manager, Strategy is responsible for playing a pivotal role in shaping the long-term direction and success of the organization.
The role is accountable for developing, implementing, and monitoring strategic initiatives to drive growth, enhance competitiveness, and maximize value creation.
The role requires a combination of analytical prowess, strategic thinking, leadership skills, and business acumen.
Main ResponsibilitiesStrategic Planning
- Conduct a thorough analysis of market trends, the competitive landscape, and internal capabilities to identify strategic opportunities and threats.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to define strategic priorities and allocate resources effectively.
Business Analysis
- Analyze industry dynamics, customer behavior, and operational performance to identify key drivers of value creation.
- Conduct financial modelling, scenario analysis, and risk assessments to evaluate strategic alternatives and inform decision-making.
- Monitor and evaluate the performance of existing strategies, recommending adjustments as necessary to optimize outcomes.
Strategy Implementation
- Develop detailed implementation plans, including timelines, milestones, and performance metrics, to execute strategic initiatives successfully.
- Coordinate cross-functional teams and departments to ensure alignment and collaboration in executing strategic projects.
- Oversee change management efforts to drive adoption of new strategies and ensure organizational alignment.
Performance Monitoring
- Establish Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and metrics to track the progress and impact of strategic initiatives.
- Conduct regular reviews and assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of strategies and identify areas for improvement.
- Prepare and present reports to senior leadership and stakeholders, providing insights into strategic performance and recommendations for adjustments.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders, including executive leadership, management, and cross-functional teams, to foster alignment and support for strategic initiatives.
- Engage with external stakeholders, such as industry partners, clients, and investors, to gather insights, solicit feedback, and identify collaboration opportunities.
Working Conditions
The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role is eligible to participate in CN’s flexible working policy.
Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.
Requirements ExperienceTransportation and Logistics
- Minimum 7 years of experience in transportation and logistics.
- Experience in marketing and sales, operations, human resources, finance or technology.
- Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset.
Education / Certification / Designation
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management or equivalent.
- Master’s Degree in Business Administration or another advanced degree.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) and Lean Six Sigma certification.
- Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset.

Technical Skills / Knowledge
- Deep knowledge of one or more of CN’s core functions, e.g., Transportation, Network Operations, Sales and Marketing, Finance or Information and Technology (I&T).
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, Teams).
- Proficient in financial analysis and business valuation.
- Capability with Tableau or similar analytical visualization tool.
- Any knowledge for any of the above would be considered as an asset.
