Lab Assistant - Graphic Arts
Responsible for operating and maintaining all (prepress, press and bindery) equipment and inventory and supplies in the Graphic Arts labs and classrooms, assisting GRA faculty and students.
Coordinates all print jobs for the department.
Assists faculty with preparation, setup, inspection of equipment and monitoring of GRA lab activities.
Performs routine, preventative maintenance and repairs on laboratory equipment and testing instruments as scheduled and as required;
identifies safety hazards such as equipment malfunction, damaged tools and ensure that the lab equipment is in safe operating conditions.
Identifies occurrences of equipment malfunction or breakage and need for maintenance, repairs, and / or replacement.
Researches, recommends and trains on new equipment needed to support the program.
Assists faculty in setting up lab equipment for activities as planned by instructors.
Monitors students while they perform their lab assignments and ensures that they are performing the proper safety protocols.
Understanding prepress to troubleshoot student files for pre-production.
Responsible for providing technical support to students while performing their laboratory assignments.
Oversees, schedules and trains student aid workers with assistance from GRA Coordinator.
Coordinates rental computers and equipment with Harper Library.
Coordinates with IT on equipment, computers, software, license and maintenance as needed.
Participates in program workshops, information sessions, recruitment and special events for GRA department and Career and Technical Programs Division.
Maintains all necessary schedules and records for the laboratory; prepares and maintains departmental records and reports.
Assists faculty in the preparation of lab assignments, maintaining supply list and ensuring ample supplies are available prior to the start of classes.
Ensures all equipment, tools and supplies are properly secured at the end of each class.
Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, assists in performing departmental inventory.
Ensures all areas are clean, orderly and inventory levels are properly stocked in labs and classrooms.
Assists in verifying capital equipment inventory and future needs.
Processes all printing needs for the program. Ensures availability of course materials for adjuncts; updates and maintains course binders for certification.
Assists Program Coordinator in the collection of Outcomes and Assessment data.
Creates and maintains a library and reference system of departmental books and periodicals.
Maintains OSHA required MSDA documentation, eye wash station and other safety protocols.
Assists students with independent practice of skills as taught and evaluated by teaching faculty.
Updates departmental social media accounts.
Attends departmental meetings.
Communicates and collaborates with other departments across the college, sharing essential information and addressing concerns.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education :
Minimum high school diploma and Graphic Arts certification with college level technical training certifications and industry-based certifications.
Associate degree in graphics or related field preferred.
Experience :
Minimum three years in a prepress or print facility with digital experience relating to software applications, Mac and PC platforms, plating and press proficiency.
Variable data experience preferred. Proficient in Bindery and finishing equipment.
