  • Aluminum Welder / Fabricator TEL Staffing — Maritime Division Summary TEL Staffing’s Maritime Division is seeking experienced Aluminum Welders / Fabricators to support shipbuilding and vessel repair operations at leading U.S. shipyards.
  • This position plays a critical role in building tactical and commercial aluminum workboats that support America’s maritime future.
  • The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in aluminum vessel fabrication, proficiency in multiple welding processes, and the ability to work in a fast-paced production environment while meeting rigorous NAVSEA and AWS quality standards.
  • This is primarily a shipyard / shop environment role with occasional offsite assignments as needed.
  • Key Responsibilities Operate required safety equipment and maintain safe work practices in accordance with OSHA, NAVSEA, and shipyard regulations.
  • Fabricate and fit aluminum components for marine vessel construction and repair.
  • Perform welding in 2G, 3G, 4G, and 6G positions using GTAW, GMAW, and GMAW-P processes.
  • Accurately interpret NAVSEA or AWS-approved Weld Procedure Specifications (WPS).
  • Conduct first-line quality checks using gauges such as fillet weld gauges, V-WAC, and bridge cam to ensure compliance with NAVSEA and AWS standards.
  • Set up and program welding power supplies, selecting correct filler metals and support equipment for each job.
  • Perform plasma cutting, beveling, clamping, tacking, grinding, heating, and bolting of components to prepare assemblies for final welding.
  • Monitor welding operations to minimize distortion, shrinkage, and overheating—critical for aluminum fabrication.
  • Inspect completed work for defects, verifying dimensional accuracy and conformance to specifications.
  • Read and work from shipyard drawings, fabrication sketches, QA packages, and 3D models.
  • Operate and maintain hand and power tools commonly used in shipyard fabrication (e.g., grinders, sanders, band saws, bending tools).
  • Coordinate daily activities with Production Managers and Shop Supervisors to maintain project milestone schedules.
  • Follow all procedures to ensure proper mil-spec filler wire and base metals are used per WPS.
  • Support other shipyard trades as required to meet production goals.
  • Work to detailed Statements of Work (SOW) and QA Work Packages for both new builds and vessel modifications.
  • Required Qualifications Documented experience as an aluminum welder / fabricator in a shipyard or marine vessel production environment; apprenticeship or journeyman certification preferred.
  • Proficiency in GTAW 5xxx and GMAW-P 5xxx aluminum welding processes.
  • Ability to weld PQR plates to qualify new company procedures.
  • Ability to achieve Level II Visual Testing (VT) NDT certification per company procedures.
  • Prior qualification to NAVSEA and AWS (D1.1 & D1.2) standards.
  • Strong knowledge of weld symbols, joint configurations, tolerances, and aluminum weld defect correction.
  • Ability to weld dissimilar metals and varying material thicknesses.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain access to military or government installations.
  • Preferred Qualifications Multiple welding process certifications (e.g., aluminum, steel, MIG / TIG, pipe).
  • Broad fabrication experience with various sheet metals and shipyard tooling.
  • Certified forklift and man-lift operator.
  • Previous experience working on tactical or government vessel programs is a plus.
  • Required Tooling Lockable personal toolbox.
  • Standard fabrication and layout tools.
  • Personal welding tools and full-face welding shield.
  • Larger tools (e.g., drills, grinders) and consumables are provided by the company.
  • All basic tools must be obtained within 90 days of hire; additional tools may be required as work scope evolves.
  • Physical Demands
  • Regular lifting of 50+ lbs, bending, stooping, crawling, and overhead work.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, on scaffolding, and in various weather conditions typical of shipyard environments.
