The College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) Lab Support Engineer serves as the primary support person for the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department(s) and for the Engineering Management faculty / staff while also extending support to over 40 teaching classrooms / labs within the college, including CSE labs.

Responsibilities include providing real-time support to faculty, staff, and students within the CSE, as well as maintaining all teaching labs utilized by the department.

As an essential part of a team comprised of another Lab Support Engineer and CECS IT Manager, the position will assume backup responsibilities for team members, requiring a high level of knowledge and deep understanding of support procedures and technologies found throughout the CECS.

Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Provides technical support to Computer Science faculty, students, and staff, including imaging desktops, setting up and deploying desktops / workstations, and maintaining 107 computers across 4 computer science teaching classrooms / computer labs to ensure uptime, optimal performance, and functionality;
  • responsible for imaging Computer Science labs, necessitating advanced knowledge of hardware, software, testing devices, and imaging solutions utilizing Ghost Solution Suite and or SCCM tools;

assumes responsibility for managing all digital signage throughout the CECS.

  • Responsible for maintenance of the CSE Info-Security lab, comprising 20 Linux-based machines used for researching various security protocols;
  • designs, installs and maintains research workstations dedicated to machine learning and AI research, predominantly consisting of high-end Lambda GPU Linux-based workstations;

designs, maintains and provides documentation for labs, podiums, conference rooms; responsible for all podiums utilized in Engineering and Computer Science, constituting a crucial aspect of daily operations.

Podium support entails familiarity with its multifaceted components, essential for troubleshooting during classroom instruction;

responsibilities extend to managing the technology in the 7 College conference rooms - this includes setup and operation knowledge encompassing cameras, computers, networking, TV systems, specialized software, and casting devices.

Additionally, the role entails operating, configuring, and documenting dedicated media rooms for Online courses. Much akin to podium technology, this requires creating training materials for Kaltura and Zoom, extensively utilized across all disciplines;

updating the CECS IT support website using Drupal is a core responsibility; maintaining an up-to-date technical acumen is imperative for ensuring compatibility across client / server applications, hardware, printers, and network devices.

This involves setup, administration, and troubleshooting of Windows desktop, MAC OS, and Linux / Unix based systems; and a foundational understanding and supporting of cellphone technologies is also necessary.

  • Images and deploys new computers during refresh cycles or upon the arrival of new faculty, ensuring their proper setup and functionality;
  • assists with yearly inventory checks and maintains our internal inventory system; works as part of the CECS IT team with regards to equipment relocation and storage tasks;
  • handles specialty printer setups, custom PC builds, and occasional adjustments to lab setups for temporary A / V needs; records job interviews using Zoom or Kaltura platforms;

and maintains the appearance of labs throughout the day.

May supervise Federal Work-Study student(s) and / or Graduate Assistants; and performs other as assigned to push forward the mission and vision of CECS.

The ideal candidate will possess the following :

  • Advanced knowledge of operating systems including Microsoft, Linux, MAC, computer hardware, software, and audio / video equipment.
  • Must have advanced knowledge of several types of server based applications, SQL database applications, engineering applications, computer science applications, and software license managers.
  • Must have knowledge of MS Office applications with the ability and skills to use and support the O365 suite.
  • Must have knowledge of printers, setup, and troubleshooting. Knowledge of HP large format printers, ink jet, and laser printers.
  • Knowledge of Broadcom Ghost Solution Suite, SCCM, Windows ADK, Microsoft MDT and WDS imaging infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of numerous computer science programs : Java, Visual Studio, BlueJ, Python, MySql, Putty, Netbeans and VirtualBox etc.
  • Knowledge of Engineering applications : Matlab, Maple, and Solid Works.
  • Written and oral communications skills.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Must have advanced troubleshooting skills and the ability to provide technical solutions with short notice, with the abilities to think outside the box and work out a solution in real time.
  • Must be skilled at troubleshooting desktop computers including but not limited to those running Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems, as well as able to troubleshoot general technology including but not limited to printers, cameras, projectors, networking, and other IT devices.
  • Ability to continually implement new technology through self-learning.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to provide instruction about laboratory equipment to students, student employees, and faculty members.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.

  • Minimum Qualifications : Associate’s degree (offset with 2 years verifiable experience and or certifications in IT related field) and 3-5 years of experience of configuring, troubleshooting, and repairing PC hardware and software;
  • 3-5 years of experience in installing, maintaining Linux based operating systems with the ability to setup basics such as SSH;
  • 3-5 years of experience with using, installing, and maintaining Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Mac operating systems; 3-5 years of experience with setup of printer and various network devices;

3 years of experience writing scripts, with a firm understanding of Powershell, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Preferred Qualifications : Bachelor’s degree and 1-3 years of work experience in an academic environment; 3-5 years working in an IT environment;
  • 3-5 years of experience writing code, scripting, and firm understanding of Powershell; advanced knowledge of operating systems with the ability to understand how systems are inter-related;
  • knowledge of networking with the ability to understand the basics to advanced troubleshooting in a real-time environment;
  • ability to work unsupervised, thinking critically to perform job functions unassisted; project management skills with the ability, and knowledge to layout a project and see through completion with limited resources;

skills in technical leadership, planning, organizing, and adapting within a multi-tasking environment; and ability to write code, scripts and working knowledge of Microsoft Powershell.
