Position description

UCSF Junior / Assistant / Associate Specialist - Lakkaraju lab

The Department of Ophthalmology at the University of California, San Francisco, is currently accepting applications for a Junior / Assistant / Associate Specialist in the laboratory of Dr.

Aparna Lakkaraju. Our research focuses on identifying pathological mechanisms and developing therapeutics for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a complex neurodegenerative disease that destroys high-resolution central vision in over 50 million older adults.

The candidate will join an interdisciplinary team of scientists to evaluate novel therapeutic targets in mouse models of disease.

This is a full-time position ideal for applicants interested in developing mouse models of disease to evaluate pathology and potential drug candidates.

Responsibilities include the following :

  • Manage transgenic mouse colonies, including breeding and genotyping.
  • Perform routine biochemical, molecular biology, and confocal microscopy experiments.
  • Design and execute studies in mouse models.
  • Generate and maintain primary cell cultures.
  • Perform data analysis, record keeping.
  • Participate in grant and manuscript writing.
  • Present findings at national and international meetings.
  • Mentor trainees as needed.

Required Qualifications :

  • Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) in biological / biochemical science or related field or must have at least four years of research experience in a related field.
  • Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a master's degree (or equivalent degree) in biological / biochemical science or related field or must have a baccalaureate degree with three or more years of research experience.
  • Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a master's degree (or equivalent degree) in biological / biochemical science or related field or must have at least five - ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Appointees at the Associate level must have significant record of academic accomplishment including published or in-press publication, and a demonstrated record of university and / or public service.
  • Applicants' materials must list current and / or pending qualifications upon submission.
  • Applicants must have obtained the degree requirement for the Specialist rank by the time of hire.
  • Hands-on experience working with rodents.
  • Proficiency in designing, executing, and analyzing in vivo experiments.
  • Experience with standard molecular and cell biology techniques including cell culture, western blotting, microscopy, PCR, genotyping, cloning.

Preferred Qualification :

Experience with ocular disease models is preferred.
