Early Head Start Assistant Teacher
Sioux Falls, SD
Duties and Responsibilities
- Act as a Teacher in the absence of the Teacher.
- Discuss assigned teaching area with classroom teacher to coordinate instructional efforts and implementing curriculum with fidelity.
- Assist in preparing lesson plan in assigned area and submit to teacher for review.
- Promote sound social and emotional growth and development through recognizing individual differences and cultural patterns.
- Set up and arrange the classroom so daily lesson plan requirements are met.
- Interact with children utilizing a variety of methods and techniques such as play activities, discussion, and supervised role-playing.
- Assist all children, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts.
- Cooperate with center staff in providing services for special needs children.
- Assist in recording children's weight and height as deemed necessary
- Assist in tracking In-kind.
- Accompany teachers on Initial Home Visits and others as deemed necessary.
- Encourage parents to become involved in the classroom.
- Encourage and promote the families' achievement of self-sufficiency.
- Clean classroom at the end of each session and prepare for the next session. Clean bathrooms daily; assist in cleaning the kitchen;
vacuum and sweep floors; empty garbage cans.
- Submit time sheets to the immediate supervisor.
- Assist the Cook / Dietary Aide as deemed necessary.
- Assist the Bus Monitor and Bus Driver as deemed necessary. (HS as applicable.)
- Maintain client confidentiality at all times.
- Report daily child observations to the Teacher.
- Participate in the Career Development Committee.
- Attend meetings, training, and seminars as deemed appropriate and necessary by ICAP.
- Perform duties in a manner consistent with safe practices and policies.
- Perform other duties as deemed appropriate and necessary.

Education and Experience
- Center Based Child Development Associate Certification or AA or BA degree in an accredited program in Early Childhood Education or a degree in any field.
- One (1) year experience and / or training working with children, preferably with preschool age children or infants and toddlers or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Skills
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of clients or employees of organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Other Work Related Abilities
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or verbal instructions.
- Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Ability to be punctual and organized.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Other such examination as deemed appropriate and necessary by the ICAP.
- Ability to be bonded.
