Assist in the leadership of the Office of Career Services in its efforts to serve the employment needs of both JD and MSJ students and alumni, including maintaining a heavy counseling schedule, reviewing and editing student materials, and assisting in managing the coordination and implementation of the Spring and Fall Recruiting Programs, the judicial clerkship application process, first-year introduction, and data collection.

Work with the office to maintain and improve the employment placement rate by researching job opportunities, marketing, and providing effective career counseling to students.

Responsible for the administration, expansion, compliance, and reporting for the externship program. Under the direction of the Assistant Dean, perform other functions including employer outreach, compiling and analyzing data, coordinating counseling and office coverage, and organizing programmatic efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities :

Counsel JD and MSJ students and alumni. Maintain a heavy counseling schedule to advise current JD and MSJ students and alumni on career paths including careers in public service, course selection, use of resources, job search and interviewing strategies, employment options, and professionalism, in addition to providing general advice on varied topics that are specifically applicable to the student or alumnus.

Perform other key managerial functions as directed by the Assistant Dean.

Responsible for the administration and expansion of the law school's externship program. Manage all records associated with the externships, serve as a contact person for students, field placement supervisors, faculty and administrators, supervise preparation of an annual evaluation of all externship placements (including evaluations from students of the externship experiences) and assure compliance with the American Bar Association standards related to externships.

Contact current placements to assess progress of current externs. Post externship opportunities for students, collect applications for specified externships, forward and collect required forms from student externs.

Conduct research and prepare memoranda for the faculty curriculum committee.

Review and edit student materials, including resumes, cover letters, personal statements, writing samples, thank you letters, and other correspondences.

Conduct mock interviews for students.

Increase job opportunities. Market the School of Law by visiting law firms and other employers in the New York and New Jersey area to promote the school and to increase job placements.

Contact potential employers (firms, government agencies, judges, non-profits, and corporations) regarding current or potential opportunities for students and alumni.

Attend alumni and bar association events to network and foster a productive relationship between potential employers and SHU School of Law.

Advance and develop strategies for students and alumni for diversity and inclusion job opportunities.

  • Assist the office in coordinating, marketing, and implementing the Judicial Clerkship, First-Year Introduction, and Fall and Spring Recruitment Programs, including reviewing thousands of applications, and reviewing high volumes of resumes, requiring daily extended hours during the calendar year (12 hour days in the office and weekend work are typical during peak recruitment periods).
  • Facilitate the collection, coordination and reporting of data. Work on internal and external data projects throughout the year, including reporting to the ABA, NALP, US News, and Princeton Review.

Advance the strategic plan of the Law School and office by examining employment outcomes to identify areas of strength and weakness and recommending course of action.

Work on the development and execution of career and professional development events. Working with the Assistant Dean develop, market, plan, and staff professionalism events ranging from brown bag gatherings, workshops, large scale networking events, and panel discussions.

Develop and modify curriculum, serve as panel moderator or lecturer.

Advise students on careers in public service. Disseminate information to students and alumni interested in public service work.

Develop strategic methods to pipeline talent for top public service hiring programs. Work on summer funding and preparatory programs designed to assist those seeking careers in public service.

Required Qualifications :

JD; 5-8 years experience in the legal profession and experience in law school higher education, preferably in law school career services office.
