Description : Job Summary :

The Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine Director of Research Support Services is responsible for leadership and management of the research support team for the schools Office of Research and Scholarship (ORS).

The Director supervises support staff in facilitating student and faculty research and other scholarship. Scholarship at the school uses diverse methods, primarily in clinical and healthcare delivery research, quality improvement, medical education, and community-engaged projects.

A scholarly project is required of all students as part of the curriculum, and many undertake additional research. The Director is responsible for ensuring appropriate and equitable support for students, including communicating about research opportunities and resources available to support their work with faculty mentors.

The Director is responsible for facilitating the work of the Scholarly Project Oversight Panel, which reviews and evaluates student progress on the required scholarly project.

The Director also supports other aspects of student scholarship, including work-in-progress sessions. To support both students and faculty, the Director manages the development and implementation of research training and support programs.

The Director is responsible for working with students and faculty to understand and adhere to research-related policies and procedures including those related to data privacy and human subjects research protections.

The Director leads the team in planning school-wide events related to research and scholarship, including the Student Scholarship Symposium.

As a member of the ORS leadership team, the Director contributes to departmental strategic planning and resource allocation decisions and collaborates with the Senior Associate Dean of Research and Scholarship to continually improve departmental operations.

Essential Responsibilities :

Supervision & Leadership :

Leads and supervises the Office of Research & Scholarship Research Services Support team, including determining qualifications for staff, hiring, maintaining and improving competence, assigning work, coaching, training (e.

g., orientation, in-service and continuing education), evaluating performance, and progressive discipline.

  • Supervises the daily coordination of work assignments and priorities for team members within the department.
  • Effectively delivers both positive and constructive feedback.
  • Oversees research support programs, including infrastructure / frameworks to support faculty and student work.
  • Demonstrates a student-centered mindset interested in guiding and inspiring the next generation of physicians and assists students from diverse backgrounds in learning project management skills to achieve project goals.
  • Demonstrates excellent written and interpersonal communication skills, including flexibility and supportiveness, with the ability to relate to diverse, multidisciplinary teams of individuals :

research scientists, analysts, clinicians, faculty, staff, and students.

  • Develops and implements effective systems to identify and track research opportunities and connect students with potential mentors.
  • Provides guidance and contributes to the development of training materials for in-person and virtual training opportunities.
  • Ensures access to appropriate coaching for students and faculty on best practices to execute scholarly work, including planning, project management, study design, data analyses and dissemination.
  • Plans / facilitates meetings that foster a collaborative team environment.
  • Develops content including agendas and keeps appropriate records / meeting minutes.
  • Assists in preparing materials for review of student research, assists with preparation of feedback to students, and enters outcomes in the schools tracking system.
  • Liaises across the School and with other Kaiser Permanente entities, facilitating coordinated strategies to implement student and faculty research effectively.
  • Continuously identifies / implements process improvements to enhance team performance and remove barriers.
  • Creates and manages project communication platforms such as newsletters or websites.
  • Collaborates externally within the school on broad initiatives to include process improvement and ad-hoc projects.
  • Assists the department leadership in strategic planning for the Departments research vision, mission, and growth.
  • Regulatory Compliance :

Guides students and faculty in preparing IRB applications, modifications, and annual continuation reports.

  • In collaboration with the Senior Associate Dean, Director of Research Administration, and Chief Compliance Officer, ensures the School (including student and faculty scholarly activities) complies with IRB, HIPAA and other regulations, including adherence to federal or other agency regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains knowledge of federal and other agency grant and contract management policies to serve as a resource for students and faculty.

Basic Qualifications :

Experience

Minimum of five (5) years managing research operations and / or research training.

Education

Masters degree in a health sciences or health-related discipline requiring research.

License, Certification, Registration

N / A

Additional Requirements :

  • Working knowledge of research design, methods, and quantitative and qualitative skills, analysis with familiarity with basic statistical methods.
  • Experienced working with students or other trainees in research
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, including designing and implementing new projects / programs, goal setting, monitoring execution, and collaborator management and the ability to teach these skills to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Experience assisting others and motivating them to create and meet goals and action plans.
  • Exceptional supervisory skills, including change management and conflict resolution.
  • Effective leadership skills, including critical thinking and sound judgment, and holding self and team members accountable.
  • Strong people skills and works well in a team and independently.
  • Ability to work in a fast-changing environment.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Minimum five (5) years in a supervisory role managing research operations and / or research training.
