The Behavioral Health Specialist is a critical role in the psychiatric care of patients. This position also serves as a system-wide resource, providing direct patient care and safety including supervision and management of children and adolescents.

Inpatient Psychiatric Unit, our mission is to facilitate crisis resolution and stabilization. We provide a supportive, structured program, including individual and family therapy, group therapy, behavioral approaches, medication management and creative arts therapy.

The Neuropsychiatric Special Care (NSC) Program provides acute psychiatric treatment for children and adolescents (4-17 years old) diagnosed with an intellectual and / or developmental disability (e.

g., Autism Spectrum Disorder; intellectual disability) who are experiencing a psychiatric crisis (e.g., out-of-control behavior;

suicidal ideation). The NSC program offers both inpatient and partial hospitalization programs (PHP). The NSC program’s mission is to provide individualized and comprehensive treatment to address each child and their family’s unique needs.

Annual Salary Range : $19.93 to $29.00 / Hourly Salary

Hours per week : Part time and Full time positions are available. Please list your preferences in the questions below.

Shift : There are a variety of shifts available for this role. Please identify your preferences in the questions within the application.

Please note : The Behavioral Health Specialist may begin their shift in one unit and based on a change in census and acuity be reallocated to a different unit to meet operational needs.

However, it is also possible for the Behavioral Health Specialist to experience extended periods of time in one department to offset long-term absences through the Months Program

Make an Impact

The Behavioral Health Specialist on IPU works with patients experiencing mental health crises or concerns. They build trust and rapport with vulnerable patients who often, do not have other mental health resources.

Our BHSs work at top of scope to facilitate therapeutic groups and interactions. Our BHSs get the chance to use their creativity, help groups of kids learn about the importance of mental health, and also learn from licensed therapists and providers to enhance their skills and grow their careers.

Qualifications :

  • Education : Bachelor’s degree with a minor in psychology or related field
  • Equivalency : Professional relevant experience may substitute for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • Certification(s) : Healthcare Provider BLS / CPR certification
  • Behavior Experience preferred

Key job responsibilities :

  • Milieu management
  • Facilitate therapeutic skills groups
  • Observation of patients to maintain safety
  • Behavioral intervention
  • Work with a multidisciplinary team of therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and other providers to help patients achieve treatment goals

Job Highlights :

  • Provides direct patient care and management of children and adolescents while under the direction of a registered nurse or licensed psychiatric professional.
  • Leads, monitors and collaborates educational and therapeutic groups for patients.
  • Participates in clinical rounds, maintains communication with unit or department leadership.
  • Responds as part of the Behavioral Assistance Resource Team; provides assistance to patients, family members or visitors 18 years of age and younger exhibiting the potential for harm to self or others.
  • Ensures proper documentation of patient progress; completes 15-minute patient checks; provides one-to-one patient observation and or milieu management..

Our unit is milieu-based therapy meaning groups of patients and team members (BHSs, RNs, etc.) work alongside one another throughout the day to deliver evidenced-based therapeutic interventions to our patients.

We also get to have a lot of fun! With creative arts therapy groups, yoga therapy, occupational therapy, and a playground outside there's a never a dull moment! We are a strong and diverse team, dedicated to our patients and their families.
