Patient Care Assist Specialist - Renal MedSurg -Nights

At Houston Methodist the Patient CareAssistant (PCA) Specialist position is responsible for functioningas an expert and demonstrates highly competent knowledge necessaryto communicate appropriately and carry out delegated nursingassistant level tasks for assigned patient populations forproviding high quality support of patient care and services.

Thisposition exercises sound judgement and executes proficient clinicalskills necessary for assisting with patientcare procedures.

The PCASpecialist position performs basic patient care activities of dailyliving (ADLs) within unit specific defined limits and job scopesuch as assistance with patient elimination hygiene comfort safetynutrition and progress activity and practices Patient and FamilyCentered Care.

Other duties for this position include independentlyand expertly performing the duties and responsibilities ofpreceptor and clinical resource to PCAs training and orientingothers.

Independentlyexecutes the duties and responsibilities of preceptor serves as aclinical resource in the department using advanced skills andcompetencies guiding and mentoring colleagues through processes toprovide optimal patient care.

SERVICEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Rolemodels the patient and familycentered care standards and providesdirect patient care under the direction of a registered nurse.

Documents where applicable care administered diagnosticmeasurements treatments and procedures in accordance withestablished policies and procedures.

Responds to the call lightsystem contacting nursing personnel as appropriate and followsthrough with meeting patientneeds.

Assists withmaintaining cleaning and stocking of equipment and supplies asestablished on assigned unit. May serve as an inhouse courier whichmay include retrieving blood hand delivering labs tele boxes etc.

Organizes the workflow problemsolves basic and routine matters andmanages multiple ongoing priorities seeking guidance and assistancefrom preceptor licensed nurse ormanagement.

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Reportsobservations conditions and problems of patients to licensedpersonnel to achieve desired patient outcomes. Provides for theprivacy of patients and families keeping the safety of the patientin mind.
  • Providesappropriate handoff at change of shift at patient bedside tocommunicate and collaborate promoting patientcenteredcare.
  • Conducts hourlyrounding to ensure patient needs are met (four Ps). Reports nearmisses and collaborates with the interprofessional health care teamto improve patientsafety.
  • Offers innovativesolutions in performance improvement projects and shared governanceactivities. impacting quality and safety target through peertopeeraccountability reporting near misses and collaborating with theinterprofessional team.

Supports initiatives to prevent conditionssuch as pressure injuries patient falls and hospitalacquiredinfections.

FINANCEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assistswith patient and staffing needs (floats) across the service line orhospital as competencies allow. Utilizes time between heavyworkloadsefficiently.
  • Utilizesresources with cost effectiveness and value creation in mind.Selfmotivated to independently manage time effectively andprioritize daily tasks minimizing incidental overtime assistingcoworkers as needed.

Role models effective time management andcoordinates colleagues to meet the overall demands of thedepartment.

EDUCATION

HighSchool diploma or equivalent education (examples include : GEDverification of homeschool equivalency partial or full completionof postsecondary educationetc.)

WORKEXPERIENCE

Three years acutecare hospital or postacute care experience or two years EmergencyMedical Technician (EMT) / Paramedic experience or Graduate Nurse(GN) who will be retaking the NCLEX for RNlicensure.

LICENSES ANDCERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • BLSBasic Life Support (AHA) AND
  • CNA Certified NursingAssistant State Licensure For Skilled Nursing Facility(SNF) / Rehabdepartments only

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ANDABILITIES

  • Demonstrates theskills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assignedjob determined through ongoing skills competency assessments andperformanceevaluations
  • Sufficientproficiency in speaking reading and writing the English languagenecessary to perform the essential functions of this job especiallywith regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety orsecurity
