Job Description :
- Prepare and maintain medical equipment, instruments, and supplies for surgical procedures.
- Assist with surgical patient care under the direction of an RN or physician.
- Verify supplies, equipment, and instruments are available prior to surgery; accurately pull case materials and complete checklists.
- Participate in the timeout process prior to every surgical case.
- Perform room turnovers including case breakdown, cleaning, and setup.
- Follow principles of sterility, aseptic technique, infection control, and universal precautions guidelines.
- Anticipate the needs of the patient and surgeon; prioritize activities and demonstrate critical thinking.
- Prepare medications for procedures under supervision; understand routine drugs, dosages, and administration routes.
- Maintain a sterile field and utilize sterile techniques.
- Inspect equipment and instruments for defects and remove defective items from service.
- Demonstrate knowledge of sterilization methods and reprocess surgical instruments accordingly.
- Communicate and ensure preference cards are accurate and updated; collaborate with the OR team.
- Act professionally and respectfully to all team members.
- Apply principles and values of customer service and continuous quality improvement.
- Protect confidentiality in all aspects of patient care, personnel, and strategic issues.
- Maintain positive working relationships and follow hospital conduct guidelines.
Physical Requirements :
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to fifty pounds.
- Engage in activities involving stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, reaching, and grasping.
- Visual acuity necessary to perform detailed tasks and operate machinery.
Working Conditions / Environmental Exposures :
- Exposure to environmental hazards such as chemicals, solvents, needles, sharps, blood, body fluids, infectious diseases, and medical waste.
- Use of protective clothing and equipment may be necessary.
