Job Title : RUSSIAN INSTRUCTOR FOR COLUMBUS INTERNATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

The Center for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies at The Ohio State University has been pleased to collaborate with the Columbus (North) International High School (CIHS) in offering Russian language instruction since August 2011.

Both first and second-year introductory Russian language courses are offered, taught by an instructor with B.A. and M.A.

degrees. The instructor will need to attend training alongside Graduate Teaching Associates by the Director of the Language Program at the Ohio State Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures on the most effective language pedagogy and classroom methods in August 2024.

The instructor teaches fifty-minute classes five days a week during the regular Columbus School District academic calendar for a total of 35-36 weeks.

Students learn elementary Russian language and engage in other activities relating to the use of Russian language such as language lab activities, watching Russian-language films, researching Russia-focused projects, etc.

The instructor reports directly to Mr. Douglas Lowery, principal of the school ( dlowery@columbus.k12.oh.us ), for any issues related to student behavior or performance or other classroom concerns.

The instructor’s compensation is funded through a Title VI 2022-2026 Department of Education grant for the academic year for a total compensation in the range of $11,000-12,500 before taxes.

The instructor will commence in August 2024 and continue through the end of May 2025.

Textbooks and other materials required for the course will be provided by CIHS or students themselves. The recommended textbook series for the course matches what OSU uses for its first-year series of Russian, which is currently Golosa I .

Additional supporting materials such as films, maps, culture boxes, etc., may be loaned from CSEEES. OSU will also provide opportunities for students to meet with guest speakers and to visit Russian cultural events on campus when schedules allow.

Job description : Teach elementary Russian language at the high school level with an emphasis on culture using OSU textbook Golosa I .

Supplement curriculum with media, games and research to build interest toward the region. Class is scheduled 9 : 10-10 : 00 AM five days a week for high school students at Columbus (North) International High School (4077 Karl Road Columbus, OH 43224) throughout the academic year.

The school year starts on August 21, 2024 and ends May 29, 2025. Instructor should be available for the Foreign Language Instructor workshop hosted by the CLLC (Center for Languages, Literatures and Cultures) at Ohio State that runs August 5-14.

Additional compensation of $1000 for attending the workshop will be added to the instructor’s August paycheck. Instructor must have work eligibility in the U.

S. and pass an FBI background check to work with children under 18.
