Job Summary

The Department of Emergency Medicine of the Denver Health and Hospital Authority is recruiting a passionate and talented Emergency Physician to serve as Clerkship Director and Assistant Residency Program Director for the Denver Health Residency in Emergency Medicine (DHREM).

The Clerkship Director will be responsible for the education of emergency medicine bound medical students at both Denver Health and the University of Colorado School of Medicine, ongoing mentorship for EM-bound students as core EM Specialty-Specific Advisor, and oversight of off-service residents / fellows rotating through the Denver Health emergency department.

As an Assistant Residency Director, this position will serve as a core member of the Residency Leadership team, focusing on projects related to health equity and pipeline programs, recruitment, and supporting all educational and academic missions of the residency program.Â

The Denver Health Residency in Emergency Medicine is one of the oldest and most highly regarded Emergency Medicine training programs in the country with a longstanding legacy of training future leaders in our specialty.

The department educates over 60 local and visiting emergency-medicine-bound students each year, providing an unparalleled clinical experience with students working at both of our core clinical sites, Denver Health and the University of Colorado Hospital.

 Students are exposed to our breadth of faculty expertise through didactics, mentorship, and unique educational opportunities focusing on Emergency Medical Service (EMS), Social Emergency Medicine, and Ultrasound.

With one of the first funded externships for Underrepresented in Medicine (UiM) Emergency Medicine applicants in the country, our department continues to push opportunities to support and diversify our program and our specialty.

With more than 12 fellowship programs across our core institutions, the Department of Emergency Medicine has a deep commitment to educational excellence and scholarship and a robust group of hard-working and committed educators.

The Emergency Medicine Physician directs emergency medical staff in an emergency department to optimize coordination of care between nurses, assistants, specialists, residents, and other medical staff.

Physicians at Denver Health are faculty members of the University of Colorado School of Medicine serve as teachers for students seeking clinical experience at Denver Health and provide education for post graduate medical trainees.

Essential Functions :

Teaching and Training :

Instruct students seeking clinical experience at Denver Health and provide education for post graduate medical trainees. (20%)

  • Deliver Emergency Care to Patients :
  • Stabilize patients in critical condition.
  • Evaluate patients' vital signs & lab data to determine emergency intervention needs and priority of treatment.
  • Conduct primary patient assessments that include information from prior medical care.
  • Analyze records, examination information, or test results to diagnose medical conditions.
  • Direct and coordinate activities of nurses, assistants, specialists, residents, and other medical staff.
  • Monitor patients' conditions, and reevaluate treatments, as necessary.
  • Select, request, perform, or interpret diagnostic procedures, , lab tests, electrocardiograms, etc..
  • Select and prescribe medications to address patient needs.

  • Develop a Plan of Care for Patients
  • Discuss patients' treatment plans with physicians and other medical professionals.
  • Encourages increased patient understanding and involvement in care.
  • Communicate likely outcomes of medical diseases or traumatic conditions to patients or their representatives.
  • Consult with hospitalists and other professionals, such as social workers, regarding patients' hospital admission, continued observation, transition of care, or discharge.
  • Identify factors that may affect patient management, such as age, gender, barriers to communication, and underlying disease. (30%)
  • Compliance :

Establish and communicate protocols to meet contractual, regulatory and accreditation requirements. (10%)

Staff Management :

Oversee the activities of staff which includes but is not limited to sourcing, hiring, and training new team members, creating and managing schedules, evaluating performance, and providing coaching to engage and motivate team members, identifying and applying career advancement opportunities for team members, and helping to resolve employee issues and disputes, mentorship and guidance.
