We have the following position at our Fontana Corporate division :
Driver Trainer / Coach
SALARY RANGE : $66,560 - $83,200 / year
POSITION SUMMARY :
The Driver Trainer / Coach is responsible for training and coaching new and existing drivers, to ensure they meet company standards, reinforce safe driving, and comply with all safety regulations.
This role involves developing training programs, teaching the Smith System Safety Principles, conducting assessments, and providing ongoing support to enhance their skills and performance.
This role involves daily travel to various locations across Southern California to conduct hands-on training with drivers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES :
- Provide full-time, hands-on training and mentoring for both new and existing drivers, focusing on safe and efficient vehicle operation.
- Conduct on-road training sessions to demonstrate best driving practices, including compliance with company policies and legal regulations.
- Evaluate driver performance, and provide continuous support and coaching to improve driving skills and safely practices.
- Conduct and / or assist in classroom training instructions, post incident retraining and new driver training / certification.
- Serve as a mentor and advisor for new drivers, providing ongoing guidance to help them transition into their roles.
- Encourage positive behavior, provide constructive feedback, and address any concerns or questions from drivers.
- Utilize camera system to review triggered incidents for risk and training purposes.
- Conduct driver discussions designed to coach, mentor and train on changing unsafe work habits.
- Maintain detailed notes of discussions using the Lytx coaching module.
- Review camera systems on equipment regularly to ensure function on a rotating basis.
- Escalate camera issues to local division shop and management for repair as applicable.
- Coordinate equipment purchases and vendor repairs with local divisions as needed.
- Lead or participate classroom instruction training in the Smith System program.
- Participate in local division training sessions as required.
- Facilitate ride-a-long training events.
- Travel to a different location throughout Southern California, daily.
- Perform all other duties assigned as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS :
- Minimum of 2 years of driver trainer / coach experience, or similar role, preferred
- Minimum of 5 years commercial driving experience, required
- Waste industry experience preferred.
- Training / mentor experience preferred.
- Must have good written, verbal, interpersonal communication and public speaking skills both in English and Spanish
- Must have patience and leadership skills to effectively influence and mentor drivers
- Must work occasional Saturdays to assist Smith System classroom training.
- Comprehensive knowledge of transportation regulations, safety standards, and best practices
- Valid California Commercial Class A or B Driver’s license and valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC).
- Positions require the review of motor vehicle records (MVRs) prior to and / or during consideration of application as well as ongoing review through California’s Electronic Pull Notice (EPN) Program
- Clean driving record with no more than 3 points on driving record or DUI within last 3 years
- Must be certified in the Smith System or equivalent driver safety Program.

- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel and excellent typing skills
- Ability to travel throughout Southern California area, frequently.
- Ability to work weekends, have a flexible schedule to accommodate training or job duties
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS :
The job involves outdoor work and exposure to various weather conditions. Flexible working hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, may be required to accommodate waste collection schedules and trainings.
Driver Trainer / Coach should be prepared for physically demanding work and be comfortable operating heavy machinery. This position is exposed to changing road conditions and closures.
This job requires the ability to lift, push and pull up to 75 lbs., operating a commercial truck, climb in and out of the truck cab frequently and perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials.
There is continuous eye / hand coordination, handling, and wrist motion, hearing and smelling.
