Vice President of Research
Summary
The Vice President for Research (VPR) reports to the Chief Academic Officer (CAO) and oversees and directs all functions of the MaineHealth Institute for Research (MHIR).
In that role, the VPR provides vision for growth and development of the research mission, fostering innovation and the advancement of biomedical knowledge that enhances the capabilities of MaineHealth (MH) in patient care activities and the overall health of the region.
- The VPR oversees Research Center Directors, Resource, Administration, and Operations Directors, and the Director of Research Training and Education at MaineHealth Institute for Research, and serves as the indirect supervisor for the faculty and staff reporting to these managers.
- The VPR oversees and directs the hiring of research-intensive faculty, the development of research space, major research equipment acquisitions and IT and technology services, as well as the building of interdisciplinary research programs.
- The VPR works in partnership with Academic Affairs leaders (medical education, innovation), physician and clinical leadership, and MaineHealth IT to advance the research enterprise at MaineHealth.
- The VPR strives to enhance the profile of the research faculty and staff within MaineHealth, the region, and nationally, in part through intramural, interdisciplinary and inter-institutional collaborations.
- The VPR ensures that faculty, staff, and trainees have access to state-of-the-art research training and education, and facilitates their participation in research activities across the breadth of biomedical investigation.
- The VPR oversees financial planning and the financial viability of MHIR and works in collaboration with the MH CAO and Maine Medical Center Research Finance Office to develop, implement and manage the Institute’s budget.
- The VPR is responsible for ensuring the effectiveness and efficiency of research administration, integrity, and compliance.
- The VPR will attract and retain qualified research professionals across a broad research portfolio including basic, translational, clinical, health services, and population health research.
- The VPR ensures a research culture that is diverse, equitable and inclusive, and a scientific environment that is transparent and collaborative.
- The VPR oversees our institutional research training and education programs.
- The VPR will work with other MH Academic Leaders to oversee development of research collaborations with strategic partners including the University of New England, the University of Maine and University of Southern Maine, Northeastern University / Roux Institute, and Tufts University School of Medicine.
- The VPR will facilitate collaborations across disciplines fostering synergies between clinical, basic science, and translational research efforts.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Education : M.D. or Ph.D. or MD / Ph.D required
- License / Certifications : N / A
- Experience : Minimum of 10 years of research leadership experience, with progressive responsibilities.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, plan, organize, coordinate, and facilitate the work of large groups of scientists.
- Interpersonal skills to effectively interact in delicate, sensitive, and complex situations, as well as to be an effective and persuasive presenter to a variety of audiences.
- Successful track record of leading an externally funded research program in the biomedical sciences.
- Successful record of developing programs, supporting faculty, mentoring new junior scientists, and understanding funding opportunities.
- Scientific leadership experience in a health-related research setting.
- A recognized scientific leader as demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications and direct contact with leaders in research communities.
- Has a broad understanding of high-level goals and the ability to translate into effective action plans.
- Has experience communicating both technical and non-technical concepts with collaborators, stakeholders and community members.
