The Clinical Data Sciences (CDS) organization within Gilead is accountable for the study design, data generation and analysis activities that support Gilead’s global clinical portfolio, including Gilead-led post-authorization and observational studies.
Through its Development Systems department, CDS also provides an important bridge between the Development and Enterprise-IT organizations, implementing and managing Development’s unique technology needs.
CDS’s vision is to advance therapeutics by providing an analytical, rigorous and data-driven foundation for innovation and excellence in drug development.
Enterprise Data Science Overview
Recently, Gilead launched the Enterprise Data Science Council (EDSC), consisting of data science leadership from each of the major business units across Gilead and chaired by the SVP Clinical Data Science.
The purpose of this council is to enable the coordinated and compliant scaling of data science across the enterprise, while preserving the strength and agility of the existing business-embedded data science teams.
- To achieve this, the Enterprise Data Science Council will take on four key roles : 1) Support and strengthen the data science community of practice;
- 2) Establish enterprise data science policies and governance (ex., Enterprise data and AI governance); 3) Coordinate and create transparency into data science use cases and investments across Gilead;
and 4) Extend our data science capability to pursue cross-functional innovation and enable functions with limited data science resources.
Position Overview :
Reporting to the SVP of Clinical Data Science, the Executive Director, Data Science is a senior leadership role accountable for both Clinical Development and Enterprise data science capabilities.
As a member of the Clinical Data Science Leadership Team, the Executive Director, Data Science is accountable for Development’s machine learning and artificial intelligence strategy, overseeing the expansion of the industry-leading Advanced Analytics organization to address the growing opportunity for value generation through the application of AI / ML, including large language models (LLMs), across Development.
From an enterprise-perspective this individual will also lead the EDSC’s efforts to extend Gilead’s enterprise data science capabilities through cross-functional innovation and by providing direct data science support for functions with limited data science resources.
Collaborating with senior data science leaders from the EDSC, they will oversee the development and execution of the EDSC’s strategy for prioritizing and resourcing diverse AI, ML and data science use cases across the enterprise.
In both their Enterprise and Development capacities the successful candidate will use an enterprise mindset approach, to lead a collaboration with technical, analytical, and clinical peers to deliver on the enterprise-wide best-practices and capabilities necessary to implement data science and AI / ML at scale.
Building on this foundation, the organization will cultivate a top tier artificial intelligence & machine learning team focused on addressing complex problems that materially advance the drug discovery, development and delivery process.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of enterprise-wide data science leadership and strategic situational judgement in using both innovative and pragmatic approaches to creating measurable business value through the application of data science and AI / ML, as well as demonstrated motivation for and excellence in people leadership and development.

Accountabilities and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following :
Collaborate closely with the Development Leadership team to build and maintain a data science and AI / ML strategy that supports and enables the Development organization
In partnership with Development Systems, Enterprise IT and Clinical Programming, develop and operationalize data ingestion, processing, integration and storage capabilities necessary to serve up highly diverse datasets for machine learning and deep learning algorithm development.
In partnership with Development Systems, Enterprise IT and data science leaders from the Enterprise Data Science Council, develop and operationalize MLOps best practices, provide input on AI / ML systems and contribute to a build-vs-buy AI platform strategy across Gilead.
In support of both Development and the EDSC, recruit a top-tier AL / ML team with a long-term focus on addressing complex problems that materially advance the drug discovery, development and delivery.
Advises and influences senior leadership / functional leads on data science strategies as well as functional issues that have a business impact.
Represents Gilead at professional societies, and in industry-wide technical discussions.
Manages their organization’s budget and coordinates limited resources to produce quality deliverables within timelines for competing priorities.
Interacts and manages KOLs / CROs and represents the company in external scientific and technical forums.
Provides guidance to employees’ development plans and carries out performance review and feedback.
Provides active coaching to team members when developing solutions to problems.
Collaborates across the EDSC and with AI / ML peer organizations to build a professional and effective data science community that is seen as a business asset, strategic partner and attracts, develops and retains top talent
Minimum Qualifications :
Masters or PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Data Science, Mathematics, Operations Research, or a related field.
14+ years of progressive experience working in the development and application of data science and analytics to address specific business problems, with 5+ years of demonstrated team leadership responsibilities
5+ years hands-on experience developing machine learning / deep learning models to help business stakeholders make data-driven decisions
Extensive experience leading data science or related strategies for highly complex business areas and / or workstreams, including short and long-range strategic planning, governance and oversight
Demonstrated ability to create and fulfill a vision in a matrix environment and work collaboratively with executive-level internal stakeholders across different functions
Demonstrated skill in resource planning, management and strong coaching capabilities to mentor / develop staff
Proven effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to translate between business leaders, scientists and technologists
Strong leadership presence with demonstrated ability to lead without authority and influence programs, projects and / or initiatives
Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills
When needed, ability to travel
Experience working within a GCP-regulated environment and with clinical trial data is
Technical & Analytical Skills
Working knowledge of Python ()
Hands-on experience performing machine-learning & deep learning in a cloud environment
Strong familiarity with conventional ML methods : support vector machines, random forests, gradient boosting, etc)
Knowledge of different deep learning network architectures and their tradeoffs including LSTM, GRU, CNN, RNN, transformer models, different pooling methods, different activation functions, etc.
Understanding of key deep learning techniques such as transfer learning, drop out, etc.
Experience applying Generative AI, including approaches to optimize their output based on the specific application (ex Retrieival-Augmented Generation (RAG))
Familiarity with data imputation methods using deep learning such as generative adversarial networks

The salary range for this position is : $274,635.00 - $355,410.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location.
These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
