We have an exciting opportunity for a Director, Standards Program (Energy Power, Industrial, and Hazardous Location) at UL Standards & Engagement.

This is a hybrid opportunity based in one of our offices in Evanston, IL; Durham, NC; Washington, DC; or Ottawa, CAN.

The Director Standards Program will oversee a diverse portfolio of standards in UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE) industry segments.

In this capacity, the Director will drive the execution of the standards development strategy to advance the mission of ULSE to make the world safer, more secure, and sustainable.

The Director Standards Program will provide direction and optimize the efficiency, capacity, and impact of safety standards, and ensure that each standard within the program is responsive, relevant, rigorous, and representative to address safety needs.

As a people leader, the Director Standards Program will lead and nurture a high-performing team that will drive the standards development and maintenance process.

Essential Functions, Roles, and Responsibilities

  • Set direction for program priorities and establish goals and objectives aligned with ULSE strategic plan. Ensures strategic alignment across standards development teams, processes, and approaches.
  • Drive the integration of safety standards and requirements into relevant end-product and services, standards, and advocate for use of UL standards publications.
  • Serve as subject matter expert in technical or program area. Actively engage external stakeholders, and represent the organization through presentations, technical committees, panel discussions, and contributions to articles.
  • Serve as chair for key standards or program development stakeholder bodies within specific industry sectors or categories.

Lead collaborative efforts and consensus building to advance safety standards initiatives.

Drive cross-functional collaboration, define, create and identify opportunities to bring together resources to solve complex and undefined issues.

Conduct investigations to understand root cause of diverse challenges, and lead process improvement within cross-functional partnerships.

  • Continuously monitor the performance and status of standards within the program, assess the urgency and support required for each to ensure the success of the entire portfolio.
  • Identify opportunities for program expansion, ensure continuous evolution and relevance of safety standards, and create capacity for new and high-impact standards.
  • Lead multiple standards teams with complex workstreams, and lead work spanning one or more program area. Provide oversight, guidance, coaching and training and cultivate collaborative environment to ensure team's success in effective execution of standards activities.
  • Contribute to department initiatives as needed.

  • Established leader with experience executing strategy. Able to set strategic direction, interpret, support, and execute organizational strategy while effectively translating objectives into actionable plans and driving successful execution.
  • Exceptional people leadership skills, with ability to develop high performing teams. Experience setting expectations while establishing and operationalizing clear goals and enforcing accountability for both processes and results.
  • Excellent communicator and presenter, skilled in conflict mediation, negotiation and influencing diverse stakeholders. Proven capability in establishing effective relationships with others, including senior leaders and external stakeholders.
  • Experience fostering collaboration and partnership with cross functional teams to develop solutions with broad impact.
  • Strategic thinker with ability to innovate and adapt in a dynamic industry landscape.

Experience and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of related work experience.
  • Experience leading teams and driving accountability for results.
  • Project management, lean six-sigma, or similar certifications preferred.
  • Experience with standards development process or application, directly or indirectly, is a plus.
  • Experience or knowledge of ANSI and other relevant accreditation bodies and processes is a plus.
