Description
As a key member of the Special Events team in Massachusetts General Hospital’s Development Office, the Assistant Director of Development, Community Fundraising is responsible for managing the highly visible Mass General BeCause Community Fundraising Program, which raises $7 million annually.
The Assistant Director reports to and collaborates with the Senior Director of Development, Third Party Fundraising to set the overall strategy and goals for the Program.
This position manages one direct report.
The Assistant Director works with gift officers and other colleagues to ensure the program goals and objectives are attained and that the BeCause Community Fundraising Program is effectively recruiting and stewarding fundraisers.
The Assistant Director is responsible for the day-to-day execution and management of the program and will ensure that proven best practices in third party fundraising are consistently applied to the program and that innovation and creativity in fundraising techniques are a priority.
As needed, the Assistant Director will support the overall efforts of the Special Events Team by serving as volunteer manager at large scale events and planning and executing virtual events via the Zoom platform.
The ideal candidate for this role will have a proven track record of managing large third party / community fundraising programs and using data, trends and strategy to move a team forward.
They will be a collegial and entrepreneurial leader and team player with a proven ability to motivate, engage and work collaboratively at all levels with donors, volunteers, leadership and faculty.
Excellent management, communication and event planning skills are necessary, as well as, and an overall understanding of development principles and practices.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
BeCause Community Fundraising Program :
- Collaborate with the Senior Director of Special Events to set the overall strategy and goals for the program.
- In partnership with the Third Party Fundraising team, manage a portfolio of 200+ events and campaign fundraisers each year.
As needed, partner with frontline colleagues and hospital faculty and staff to develop individual strategies for those in their portfolio.
- Work with the Information Management and Development Services teams regularly to ensure the community fundraising data is tracked accurately.
- Work with the Integrated Marketing and Communications team and external vendors to ensure the production of creative and inspiring marketing and communications campaigns and collateral within brand standards.
- Ensure all funds raised via the BeCause Program are accurately entered and reflected in the fundraising database (Blackbaud CRM) and prepare program fundraising status reports.
- Develop strategies and tactics to recruit new third party fundraisers to ensure a pipeline of support.
- Serve as the expert in the third party fundraising platform, Classy, and manage fundraiser support; including expertly navigating backend functionality and creating fundraising pages.
- Cultivate and steward relationships with Champion / Gold level fundraisers and continue to expand and refine the stewardship experience and incentives offered.
- Work closely with the Integrated Marketing and Communications team to ensure high-quality targeted marketing and communications to increase program awareness.
- Assist with operational activities, such as inbox management, response time and inquiry resolutions, meeting coordination and related materials, and invitation list management.
- As needed, manage vendor relationships and budgets and effectively allocate program resources.
- Manage relationships with hospital faculty, committees and senior leadership, providing appropriate communications.
- Serve as the onsite MGH representative at specific BeCause Events and provide onsite event support as needed.
- Provide event planning coaching and support to BeCause third party fundraisers and cultivate and steward relationships with community fundraisers;
offer guidance and support for their initiatives.
- Manage a Development Associate who will support the Third Party Fundraising Program.
- Attend and work weeknight and weekend events, as needed.
Other Special Events :
- Partner with the Senior Director and other colleagues to manage the Cancer Center 5k Teams Strategy.
- As needed, the Assistant Director helps staff and serves as a Volunteer Lead at various events.
- Based on the overall event schedule and business needs, the Assistant Director serves as Event Lead on 2-5 virtual events via the Zoom platform managing the planning and execution of the virtual event from start to finish.

Qualifications
This position requires a bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of event planning and execution experience. Experience working with philanthropic donors, prospects and volunteers, strongly preferred.

- Competency using videoconferencing platforms (Zoom and Teams preferred), CRM databases and fundraising platforms, and Microsoft Office products.
