The Production Broadcast and Live Event Engineer manages the media technology in support of all live events including, but not limited to Athletic Broadcasts, Chapels, Repairs, concerts, and corporate events that occur at Azusa Pacific University at all levels and budget sizes of production.

This role also oversees all aspects of lighting design, programming, and maintenance required for all live events. This position is responsible for technical design and direction for event and broadcast productions.

This position also contributes to the maintenance, configuration, and design of broadcast systems as it applies to department operations.

The position leverages knowledge of existing systems and services, as well as capabilities available in the marketplace, to create the most effective solutions to meet the media and live event needs of the university.

This position requires someone committed to excellence in customer service (supporting the department’s WIN Statement to create Enthusiastic, Returning Partners ), and who has a good understanding of Azusa Pacific University’s overall business, business structures, and business practices.

Required Education

  • Requires Bachelor’s degree in Media Production or equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Prefer SBE Broadcast Certification

Required Experience

Three to five years of broadcast engineering experience

Five to seven years of live-event production and / or broadcast and technical direction experience, preferably with experience across all major disciplines : audio, video, lighting, graphics, etc.

Primary Duties / Essential Functions

Designs and programs lighting support campus wide for all live media production events.

Coordinates all repairs of lighting equipment campus wide.

Provide technical direction, assistance, and multimedia integration support to university productions.

Partners with the Director of Media Production throughout the entire life cycle of an event.

Displays keen knowledge of live broadcast programming concepts, principles, methodologies and techniques.

Consults with external and internal customers to recommend technology solutions.

Ensures proper alignment, timing, and settings of systems in accordance with manufacturer and industry standard specifications.

Establishes technical standards, policies, and procedures to ensure media systems are scalable, reliable and maintainable, while also working with other groups within the university as required.

Trains and mentors student and staff in correct operation of equipment, as well as professional production techniques and etiquette.

Directly supervises, educates, and trains a team of student Engineering Interns.

Supports emergency backup and recovery functions to ensure reliability and maintainability.

Provides necessary support and training to Media Services staff concerning the use of production equipment and facilities.

Contributes to basic maintenance and configuration of production equipment for University productions as directed by Management.

Understands and can operate video / audio / graphics / lighting equipment for live productions as directed by the Director of Media Production when student staff is not available.

Research emerging trends in professional audio, broadcast, and media production technology and how they can be applied and used to enhance the student and client media experience at APU.

Lighting Designer for all events, which includes programming and maintenance as needed.

Perform other tasks as assigned by the Director of Media Production and Supervisor / leadership.

Regular, punctual attendance as required by the supervisor based on department needs.

Ability to be on site to work events / projects on nights, evenings, and weekends as directed by the Director of Media Production.

Skills

Excellent knowledge of signal processing, transport and transmission equipment.

Excellent knowledge of digital audio and video standards and equipment.

Knowledge of video and audio codecs, frame / sample rates, and formats.

Strong knowledge of TCP / IP Networking.

Working knowledge of matrix and party line communications systems such as Riedel Artist, RTS, or ClearCom, from both a setup and operational perspective.

Knowledge of computing preferred, especially DSP programming (i.e. Soundweb London, Q-SYS, etc.), and computer-based measurement programs (i.e. Smaart).

Knowledge of RF products such as wireless microphones, in-ear monitors, and radios, preferably with experience on Shure products.

Knowledge of broadcast video equipment and proper signal flow

Must have a service-oriented mindset with the ability to organize, prioritize, and delegate tasks while transferring knowledge and expertise to empower clients and user

Working knowledge of lighting consoles including, but not limited to, GrandMA, Obsidian, etc., and all emerging lighting technologies in the industry.

Working knowledge of rigging and structural support.

  • High level of independence, show initiative, and have the ability to be highly motivated. This must be done in a manner that is consistent with the team management structure that is employed by the group.
  • This person must recognize that much of the work is completed without direct supervision. This requires great prioritization and judgment, and an accuracy and integrity of work that will represent the mission and values of the IMT group.
  • T his person will supervise student staff as needed. Examples of supervision include, but are not limited to; scheduling, overseeing load-ins and strikes, coaching and directing, managing interns, and supervising engineering projects.
  • To enable the Azusa Pacific University media systems to operate normally at all times, this person is required to be available by telephone for management, consultation and liaison with support, after normal working hours and on weekends.

This may require considerable onsite presence to manage emergency situations.

Physical Demands

Repetitive hand motions and sitting at a computer keyboard.

Listening and speaking on the telephone.

Sitting and / or standing 6+ hours per day as needed for office work.

Ability to work long hours / shifts on your feet away from the desk as needed for event production work.

Ability to reach, grasp, pull, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs., occasionally.

Visual Demands

Ability to read and work for extended amounts of time on computer and video monitors.

Pleasant office setting, comfortable temperature for office work

Event Production may include work in indoor production venues as well as outdoor environments from early in the morning up to late at night, and up to 6 + days per week year-round in the South-California climate.

  • CAD and / or Vector works or equivalent drawing software.
  • Audio : Yamaha, QSC, Dante.
  • Lighting : GrandMA, Obsidian, ETC.
  • Video : Hitachi, Panasonic, video shading, Ross Carbonite, Ross Xpression, Ross Mira.
  • Engineering : Riedel MediorNet, Riedel Artist, fiber-based infrastructure, Evertz routing, tally systems.

Compensation

Grade 14 : $35.44 to $40.76 is the hourly compensation for this role and reflects what Azusa Pacific University reasonably expects to pay for this position.

Actual compensation may vary based on the qualifications, experience, and internal equity. In addition to compensation, APU offers a competitive benefits package .
