Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Community School Director at Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom H.S, Academic Tutors / Success Mentors work with chronically absent youth to address attendance barriers and help them achieve educational outcomes.

They identify causes of poor attendance, such as family struggles or health issues, and collaborate with CAS staff and DOE to find solutions.

Success Mentors provide academic tutoring, lead activities, and organize events.

Reporting to the Program Director, the Success Mentor supports students needing additional academic help, focusing on science, literacy, math, writing, and attendance.

This part-time position involves working 30 hours per week, 6 hours per day, when DOE schools are in session.

Essential Duties :

  • Check-in daily with a caseload of youth assigned to you for the year and meet with them regularly, both one-on-one and in small groups, to check in on how school is going and listen to youth's needs, provide tutoring, address academic needs.
  • Meet and greet matched youth each morning / afternoon when they arrive at school or program site; make early morning phone calls to absent students.
  • Track attendance and celebrate improvements.
  • Work with school and site leadership to identify appropriate interventions to support and engage the mentee.
  • Seek advice and identify targeted sources of youth or family supports from appropriate school staff and community-based partners under the direction of the Site Director.
  • Keep notes about youth attendance patterns, needs, and interventions - make sure monitoring of data is strategic.
  • Attend (or be represented at) weekly / bi-weekly student success meetings to share any best practices or challenges and to present a summary of how youth are doing.
  • When working with groups of youth, develop and maintain an effective system of classroom management that encourages children to develop pro-social behavior and self-discipline.
  • Understand and promote the organization's Mission, Vision, and Core Values to ensure alignment with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Provide personalized academic support to students in grades 9-12, assisting with homework, assignments, projects, study strategies, and exam preparation.
  • Assist program staff in organizing and facilitating school-wide activities.
  • Encourage students to engage in other program activities and utilize available resources.
  • Actively participate in weekly team meetings, supervision sessions, and trainings.
  • Collaborate with Department of Education (DOE) staff to communicate with parents about attendance, performance, improvement, and effort.
  • Offer one-on-one support to students regarding attendance, academic performance, and effort.
  • Communicate any issues affecting students' academic performance and attendance to the Program Director and Community School Director.
  • Implement attendance improvement interventions for students identified as chronically absent.
  • Lead post-secondary workshops.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Associate's degree required, Bachelor's preferred.
  • 2-3 years of experience in youth development, with proficiency in Science and Math subjects.
  • Experience working with the high school population.
