Signal Management Services (SMS) is the largest self-insured provider of maritime USL&H Workers’ Compensation Coverage in the country.

Signal Members encompass all aspects and sizes of the industry including marine terminal operators, shipbuilding, ship repair and maintenance, marine construction, oil and gas operations, as well as other waterfront employers supporting the maritime industry’s mission.

The Mutual prides itself on the quality of its Members and the services provided to them. SMS’s safety team principal focus is on partnering with our Members to enhance the safety of Members’ employees.

Position Summary

The Regional Senior Safety Manager will join a strong team of safety professionals providing innovative, industry leading assessments and solutions to our Members within a regionally geographic area.

The position’s primary responsibility is to engage Member executives, company leaders and safety teams at their facilities and guide them to higher levels of commitment and participation in safety at their workplaces.

This includes working closely with the 50+ regionally based Members for the effective execution of safety culture, process, and management system elements.

These responsibilities move the Signal Safety Team in its mission toward an incident-free culture within the Mutual that returns Member employees home each night injury free.

The position requires a clear understanding and ability to engage with and influence employees at all levels from the CEO to the worker in the field, in both union and non-union working environments, with a meaningful and effective presentation and influencing skills that can be modified to address an executive audience or for awareness training at the employee level.

The ideal candidate will reside in Long Beach, CA, allowing the majority of Members to be within driving distance for the Safety Manager.

The company will pay reasonable relocation expenses.

To be considered for the role, you MUST HAVE Maritime, Mining or Aerospace Safety Experience.

Key Elements

  • Demonstrated ability to influence a wide range of leaders, operational managers, and employees on the importance of implementing a strong safety culture and compliance with safety processes.
  • Competence in safety management systems, ISO45001, federal, state, and local regulatory standards.
  • Engage with Members to ensure safety accountability is leveraged throughout the management and employee teams.
  • Extensive knowledge of workplace hazards and controls that can mitigate risk.
  • Clear understanding of loss analyses and an ability to draw conclusions that assist in the prioritization of actions or safety management system changes.
  • Demonstrated incident analysis skills and the capability to thoroughly investigate serious and fatal workplace incidents.
  • Confidence in delivering formal executive level training and / or presentations.
  • Capable of preparing, organizing, and delivering professional presentations

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Interface with our Members to ensure superb safety program support.
  • Assist with instilling a personal safety culture throughout the workforce.
  • Conduct safety visits at Member locations, identify solutions for identified risks.
  • Provide information for internal / external publication.
  • Capable of responding effectively to requests for information and communicating clearly and accurately, both orally and in writing.
  • Work in a fast paced, challenging environment to help an industry and its Members enhance its safety culture.

Other Expectations

  • Assist the Signal Underwriting and Marketing Department as requested.
  • Maintain a valid state driver’s license and ability to travel by vehicle and by air.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Maintain confidentiality with respect to the Company's proprietary information.
  • Willingness to travel for business purposes, generally 50%, including frequent domestic overnight travel.
  • Participate in corporate or safety team projects, as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as required or directed.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read and understand written and oral communication in English and to interpret U.S. safety and technical information.
  • Ability to speak, write and present in Spanish, a plus.
  • Competent personal computer skills using Microsoft Office applications, as well as an aptitude to learn and utilize company computer systems as needed or directed.
  • Superior project management and organizational skills
  • Successful working under supervision. Usually at location(s) remote from supervision.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, percentages and to create and interpret graphs and compare values. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.

Physical Demand Requirements

Frequently required to sit; stand and walk for extended periods in different location outside the office. Use hands and fingers to handle or feel.

Reach with hands and arms. Ability to speak clearly and hear.

  • Occasionally climb to heights exceeding 20'. Stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl in into and around tight spaces.
  • Ability to lift and / or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Capable of close-up, distance, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable a person with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from four-year college or university and 3+ years related experience; or Associate’s degree and 4+ years related experience preferred.
  • Maritime and Container Safety experience is preferred. Candidates with mining or aerospace safety experience will be considered.
  • Safety Certifications, such as CSP, ASP or equivalent preferred.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, it should be expected that in addition to an office environment there will be regular exposure to the outside elements, moving machines, and mechanical parts, and industrial hazard.

An ability to take proper protective precautions is expected. Personal protective equipment will be provided by the company and must be used when performing the job functions in the field.
