The Freeman Chair in China Studies is a leading source of insight and analysis on China’s evolving political system and the dynamics that impact its domestic policy agenda and external behavior.

Our mission is to shape the public policy debate by providing timely and objective analysis that challenges the status quo and informs policymakers, the public, and corporate executives on the most important issues impacting China’s political trajectory.

The Freeman Chair is recruiting a program manager / research associate (PM / RA). The PM / RA will manage the Interpret : China project.

The project aims to curate, translate, and provide analysis on relevant and important primary source Chinese documents, with the ultimate goal of transforming how outside observers understand China’s ambitions, behavior, and trajectory.

The PM / RA will be responsible for overseeing a wide range of project components, including conducting research to identify primary source documents, maintaining the document library, coordinating project specific events and publications, facilitating new translation requests, and liaising with research programs and support offices at CSIS and with members of the policy community outside of CSIS.

In addition to supporting the Interpret : China project, the PM / RA will conduct research for the program as a whole where needed.

The salary range for this position is $58,000-$65,000 based on experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following :

  • Managing the day-to-day operations of Interpret : China.
  • Conducting primary source research across Chinese academic, government and media sources to select materials on strategically relevant topics for translation.
  • Organizing public and private events, conferences, and workshops related to the project.
  • Coordinating the publication of new analysis and content for the project.
  • Managing external communications, including maintenance of contacts databases, sending of event invitations, and dissemination of project publications in all formats.
  • Providing research assistance where needed on other Freeman Chair projects, beyond Interpret : China.
  • Other administrative tasks as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE :

  • Master’s degree required, with demonstrated interest in Chinese politics, economics, and foreign affairs.
  • Advanced Mandarin language skills are essential for this position.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of administrative or research experience required.
  • Strong attention to detail, professionalism, good judgment, and proactivity are essential.
  • Familiarity with and interest in contemporary China, its domestic and foreign policies is a must.
  • Ability to multitask and to work closely with a range of individuals with diverse backgrounds, dispositions, and executive levels.
  • Strong writing skills are essential, and will be judged via writing assignments as part of the hiring process.
  • Ability to build complex project budgets and manage expenses.
  • A positive attitude, creative outlook, and ability to project a positive and professional image to the public, co-workers, partners, and CSIS partners.

The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Performances of duties require the use of hands and fingers to handle or feel. The job frequently requires ability to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms and talk or hear.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
