At Houston Methodist the Sr SurgicalTechnologist (L&D) position requires proficient knowledgeand skills necessary to carry out delegated tasks associated withthe safe and efficient operating room support functions andanticipating the needs of the surgeon and nursing staff to supportthe patient during the vaginal delivery and / or surgical procedure.
This position works independently exercising sound judgement andreports observations and patient problems to the licensed nurse orsurgeon.
In addition to performing the duties and responsibilitiesof a Surgical Technologist the Sr Surgical Technologist(L&D) position will provide mentoring and guidance forSurgical Tech positions utilizing skills and knowledge helping totrain and orient others.
This position is responsible for assignednonnursing functions and practices relationshipcentered care inconcert with Houston Methodist Values.
Other duties for the SrSurgical Technologist (L&D) position will include generalpatient care and department upkeep as delegated by licensedpersonnel.

Preparesthe operating room equipment and supplies for the next patient.Anticipates additional instrumentation equipment and supplies forusage during the procedure before obstetrician scrubs toaccommodate planned procedures.
Maintains and accuratelycommunicates updates for surgeon preference cards within theapplicable serviceline.
- Supports theobstetrician during obstetrical procedures performing competentlythe surgical tech role in the provision of surgical assistanceduring a variety of obstetrical procedures including but notlimited to as appropriate for the respective entity : vaginaldeliveries operative vaginal deliveries cesarean section deliveriesand other nondelivery obstetrical and gynecologicprocedures.
- Assists thecirculating RN with sponge instrument needle and other surgicalcounts. Assists with the care of instruments equipment and suppliesfollowing surgicalprocedure.
- Role modelsbehaviors and skills through peertopeer accountability towardsimproving department score for patientsatisfaction.
QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIALFUNCTIONS
Maintains higheststandard of sterile technique pre during and post obstetricalprocedures and / or deliveries. Prepares sterile dressings and / orother devices.
Cleans and prepares instruments for terminalsterilization. Assists other members of the team with terminalcleaning of theroom.
- Organizes the workflow effectively problemsolves and manages multiple ongoingpriorities with minimalsupervision.
- Participatesin debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure qualitypatient care. Initiates corrective actions and improvementactivities towards improving department and hospital quality andsafety targets reporting near misses and collaborating with theinterprofessional healthcareteam.
FINANCE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS
Maintainsefficient use of surgical supplies and minimizes opening ofsupplies until confirmation that will be used during surgery.
Makesrecommendations for cost containment duringcases.
Organizes timeeffectively minimizing incidental overtime and sets priorities.Utilizes time between heavy workloads efficiently and helps otherteammembers.
GROWTH / INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Identifies andpresents areas for innovation efficiency and improvement fordepartment projects and shared governance activities.
May cochair aunitbased Shared GovernanceCouncil.
- Acts as resourcein surgical technology for the department on other hospitalcommittees. Participates in one department or hospital committee orsubcommittee and facilitates the accomplishment of the goals of thecommittee orsubcommittee.
- Proactivelyseeks opportunities to enhance knowledge and learning towardsexpertise in competencies with a focus on continual development.
Completes and updates the My Development plan on an ongoingbasis.
