The Office of Laboratory Animal Research (OLAR) has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Animal Care I position.

Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to provide routine and specialized care for a wide variety of species of large and small laboratory animals which are used by scientists for biomedical research and education in the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Nursing at the University of Colorado Denver.

Examples of Work Performed

This full-time, University Staff (unclassified) Animal Care I position will perform tasks that are structured and designed to provide training and experience in the research animal care occupation.

Tasks are performed under direct supervision, detailed instruction, and guidance. The duties for this position will include :

  • Evaluate and record basic health status of animals; change, clean, sanitize, and / or disinfect animal cages, pens racks animal support areas, feeding devices, watering devices, and all animal contact surfaces using appropriate methods
  • Weigh, administer medications, breed, restrain, euthanize, and transport laboratory animals
  • Record animal census
  • Record daily actives in a database
  • Procure and transport animal feed and supplies
  • Collect and properly dispose of soiled animal bedding and other wastes
  • Operate mechanical cleaning equipment such as buffers, high pressure washers, laundry equipment and environmental monitoring equipment
  • Lubricate and conduct minor repairs on animal care equipment
  • Perform related work as assigned or required

Minimum Qualifications

One year of experience caring for, feeding, or providing health care for animals in a veterinary laboratory, breeding, or boarding facility

Substitutions : College coursework in veterinary technology, animal science, biology, or a related field of study related to the work assignment may substitute year-for-year for the general experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience entering data into a database
  • Experience keeping activity logs and managing inventory
  • Experience handling rodents (rats and mice)
  • Experience in an animal research facility
  • Experience operating complex machinery

NOTE : This position has been designated as essential personnel, Subject to call 24 hours per day, seven days per week and may be required to carry a pager.

Position may also be required to Stay over late or Come in early to Cover shifts, as needed and may be required to respond to any emergencies as needed.

If hired, you will be required to provide effective off-hours phone contact info for emergency call-in purposes.

Salary and Benefits

The hiring salary for this position has been established at $37,440 $42,200.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

The above salary range () represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
