The Opportunity
We are seeking a Full Time (40 Hour) Nocturnist Physician Assistant III to join our Surgery team at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
The schedule will consist of (4) 10-hour shifts, Monday through Thursday. The hours are 8 : 00 PM to 6 : 00 AM. We are located on the Cooley Dickinson Main Campus at 30 Locust St, Northampton, MA 01060.
Under the clinical supervision of the Chief of the service line, the PA oversees and participates in the care of patients in the inpatient setting.
The Physician Assistant performs evaluations, coordinates and participates in treatment plans, monitors patient progress and documents patient care.
This role will work with general surgery and potential first assist coverage for OB / GYN. The PA will also have the chance to assist with bedside procedures and serve as first assist in the operating room.
Our PAs work autonomously to the top of their licensure and are responsible for :
- Presenting and discussing the findings of the initial evaluation of patients with the surgeon to determine the treatment plan
- Obtaining and documenting appropriate and comprehensive health histories and physical examinations
- Ordering diagnostic tests and interpreting results
- Reviewing patient care management issues with the Medical Director and consulting with appropriate resources as needed
- Performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including but not limited to :
- Wound care / debridement
- Ostomy care
- Tube / drain care and / or removal
- Suturing
- Suture or staple removal
- Insertion of nasogastric tubes
- Bladder catheterization
- Providing first-level response to acute patient complications and emergencies and initiating appropriate measures
- Participating in the discharge planning process at the point of admission and throughout the patient's hospitalization
- Educating, instructing and counseling patients and families
- Carrying pager and participating in post-surgical phone calls

- Master’s degree in physician assistant studies required.
- 6 years of PA experience required preferably in surgery.
- Certified Massachusetts Physician Assistant licensure required upon hire.
