Job Summary
The Fleet Manager oversees UCSFs Transportation Departments fleet of transit buses, vans, sedans and parking enforcement vehicles.
He / she oversees fleet technology, clean fuel alternatives, fleet acquisition, maintenance and surplusing.
Transportation Department Fleet includes All-electric BYD buses, standard gasoline-powered buses, all-electric vans, hybrid sedans and parking enforcement vehicles.
The Fleet Management is overseen by the Fleet Manager with assistance of one full-time employee and fleet washing / cleaning and maintenance service contracts.
Because of the large and diverse fleet and outsourced maintenance contracts, the individual requires excellent managerial skills to engage and supervise employees and contractors.
Pre-COVID, approximately two million passengers were transported each year by UCSFs 80 buses on 18 different routes. All of the routes are through a dense metropolitan area and across hilly terrain.
The number of buses and routes is expected to increase once the current Work From Home directive ends and in tandem with the universitys continued growth.
Key responsibilities of the Fleet Manager are to plan for the continued growth of UCSFs transit system, manage the complexities that are associated with an expanded network, and maintain fleet that meets the operational, safety and sustainability goals.
The individual also has responsibility for providing outstanding customer service and improving both the driver and passenger experience by harnessing available technology such as Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) systems and On-board camera system and other equipment.
UCSFs current fleet is very diverse and includes 15 all-electric BYD buses, all-electric vans, gasoline and diesel buses, parking enforcement vehicles and hybrid sedans.
The Fleet Manager will be instrumental in the Universitys efforts to acquire additional electric buses (applying for grant support, whenever possible) and for maintaining the electric vehicle fleet.
Concurrently, the individual must also maintain the Universitys old shuttle fleet, making recommendations to leadership for surplusing vehicles when warranted.
To a lesser extent, but nevertheless important, the individual will acquire, maintain, and inventory various other types of vehicles (in additional to transit buses and shuttles), including parking vehicles and vehicles for other UCSF departments, including specialty vehicles for police, facilities, mail services.
A key responsibility of this position will be to work with outside vendors and ensure maintenance, repair, and bodywork is procured according to policies and performed at the highest value.
Department Description
UCSF Transportation Services is an auxiliary department within Campus Life Services (CLS). The department provides services across the UCSF enterprise (Campus and UCSF Health), and its customers include employees, students, trainees, patients and visitors.
More than 185 full time employees (FTEs) work in the department, including in parking services, transit services, transportation demand management services, and business operations.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related area and 5-7 years of relevant experience and / or equivalent experience / training
Class B license or the ability to acquire the license within twelve months of hire date
Broad knowledge of transit fleet procurement, operations and maintenance, as well as related policy and regulatory compliance requirements from governmental agencies
Experience working in a varied and complex environment that requires making sound judgments, thinking innovatively, and solving problems creatively
Proficiency in the use of basic computer applications
Knowledge of transportation industry best practices and transportation technologies such as electric vehicles and / or fleet management applications to ensure most efficient and effective use of resources and sustainability efforts
Direct experience managing a bus / shuttle transit program, which includes an emphasis on driver and passenger safety
Proficiency in the use of business computer applications
Skills in procurement, negotiations, and vendor management
Experience overseeing staff and service contracts
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to work effectively, across all organization levels, internally and externally
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Experience delivering high-quality customer service
