Position : Senior Assistant / Associate Librarian for Student Engagement and Success (12-Month)

Effective Date : On or about August 1, 2024

Salary : The Senior Assistant Librarian (12-Month) classification salary is $74,280 to $165,564 / per year (12 monthly payments per year) and Senior Associate Librarian (12-Month) classification salary is $85,224 to $181,740 / per year (12 monthly payments per year).

The anticipated hiring range is $85,000 to $95,000 / per year. Salary offered is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Research and Information Services

The Student Engagement and Success (SES) Librarian position will support success programs and services to fit the needs and strengths of our students in both academic and non-academic endeavors.

Further, this position will work with campus programs to engage students for learning and research experiences and career support.

The Librarian will work with library administration, faculty, and staff to create and promote inclusive practices and policies within the library, and provide instruction, research and support for CSULB programs including :

  • First Year Initiatives
  • Learning Assistance Center
  • Upward Bound
  • Educational Opportunity Program
  • American Language Institute
  • UROP, University Research Opportunity
  • Honors Program
  • McNair Scholars

This position strongly aligns with Beach 2030, CSULB’s 10-year strategic plan that defines campus-wide goals for building a future-ready university.

Required Qualifications :

Master's degree in library science or equivalent (MSLS, MLIS, MALS) from a library school program accredited by the American Library Association.

Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of degree by July 1, 2024.

Demonstrated potential to achieve tenure through effective job performance and scholarly service activities. A record to fulfill the research and scholarly activities and service commitments would commensurate with rank as required for a tenure-track position in the library.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with public and academic librarians and staff, teaching faculty, and students in a rapidly changing information environment
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, design, and implement innovative outreach events for students, faculty, staff, and the community at large
  • Experience and / or demonstrated ability in reference and instructionally related activities A record would commensurate with rank
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Demonstrated skills in designing promotional materials
  • Experience designing and implementing library programming such as orientation events
  • Experience with information literacy instruction, including the development of student learning outcomes and lesson plans
  • Demonstrated understanding of issues faced by first generation, non-traditional, and / or underrepresented student populations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of innovative or emerging technologies and ability to apply these concepts to library applications
  • Experience of successfully working with populations demographically and socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body ()

Duties :

  • Provide in-person and online reference services at a service-oriented and all-purpose research and information services desk including some evenings and weekends
  • Build relationships with academic and non-academic units across campus assisting at-risk students, first-generation students, and international students
  • Support student research and engagement programs designed to promote intellectual achievement, encourage faculty mentored research, and prepare students to become engaged citizens and professional leaders
  • Develop creative and innovative Library Student Success initiatives to raise awareness about the ways the library can serve as an essential partner in facilitating the success of students
  • Represent the library in the creation and re-visioning of first-year experience programs, online orientations, and student engagement initiatives across the campus
  • Coordinate orientation and information literacy programming for first-year, transfer, and graduate student success programs
  • Seek out opportunities to establish new campus collaborations and / or additional services as well as new programs developed by the university
  • Coordinate assessment of library student success initiatives and participate in assessment of campus-wide student success initiatives
  • Serve on university-wide committees engaged in research on student success
  • Develop robust partnerships with local preference high schools, feeder community colleges and the city of Long Beach
  • Engage in library and university governance including library and campus committees
  • Engage in research, publication, and presentation activities to meet the requirements for tenure and promotion
  • Participate in service to the department, university, and community

About the University Library :

The University Library supports the instructional and research needs of the campus community through its breadth and depth of collections, exceptional library faculty and staff-led services, and innovative use of library spaces.

Currently, there are 16 full-time equivalent faculty members. Library faculty serve as subject-specialists and liaisons to CSULB’s 63 academic departments and programs, collectively delivering over 800 instruction sessions a semester.

We work independently and collaboratively to strengthen student information literacy skills through one-on-one consultations, one-shot instruction, embedded course instruction, and modular and scalable eLearning experiences.

We ensure that library collections align with curricular needs and reflect emerging discipline-specific knowledge. The University library has one of the largest collections in the California State University System.

It is 8th in the system for print collections, 4th largest in ongoing subscription access, and 6th in overall library budgets.
