Job Description

The Fifth Judicial District of the Iowa Judicial Branch is seeking qualified candidates for immediate Court Reporter openings. The position will include travel within the Fifth Judicial District, some positions requiring more than others, and may be assigned to work with any Judicial Officer as needed. Compensation includes base salary plus transcript income and State of Iowa benefit package. Starting salary dependent upon relevant courtroom experience.

The starting salary for new State of Iowa Judicial employees is expected to be at the base of the pay range.

Hours : Monday - Friday 8 : 00A - 4 : 30P

The Court Reporter openings for the 5th Judicial District of the Iowa Judicial Branch are with the following Judges :

  • Hon. Judge Lauber, District Court Judge (Polk County- part-time)
  • Hon. Judge Cox, Juvenile Court Judge (Polk County)
  • Hon. Judge Faith, District Court Judge (Dallas County)
  • Hon. Judge Rosenberg, District Court Judge (Polk County)
  • Hon. Judge Cobb, District Associate Court Judge (Dallas County)
  • Hon. Judge McLellan, District Court Judge (Polk County)
  • Hon. Judge Seidlin, District Court Judge (Polk County)
  • Hon. Judge Relph, District Court Judge (Wayne County)

Key Responsibilities

  • Captures court testimony and proceedings with stenography machine
  • Reads back court testimony and proceedings upon request
  • Prepares transcripts, performs general office work
  • Marks and records exhibits during court proceedings
  • Performs related work as determined by Judge, Chief Judge or designee
  • Electronic document filing required in all counites within District 5
  • May be required to work for any Judicial Officer in the 5th District per operational needs
  • Travel required
  • Court Reporter will purchase and maintain court reporting software and stenotype machines and / or verbatim recording equipment

    Minimum Qualification Requirements

    Education, Experience, and Special Requirements

    Graduation from an accredited high school (or High School Equivalency).

    Must meet one

  • Be a registered Professional Reporter (RPR) from the National Court Reporters Association.
  • Be a Certified Verbatim Reporter (CVR) from the National Verbatim Reporters Association.
  • Completed a court reporter training program.
  • Special Requirements

  • Must obtain an Iowa Certified Shorthand Reporter license within one year of employment.
  • Certification must remain current.

  • The Court Reporter will purchase and maintain court reporting software and stenotype machines and / or verbatim recording equipment.
  • Travel required.
