Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking a Crew Leader Maintenance for its Fairfield Area Headquarters. As the qualified candidate, you will serve as a member and leader of a work crew performing a combination of skilled equipment operation, preventive maintenance and manual labor tasks in order to maintain Virginia's roadways.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to interpret and apply work zone safety and traffic control manuals.
- Ability to lead, direct, oversee the work of others and train others.
- Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
- Safety shoes required.
- Basic knowledge of inventory procedures.
- Considerable knowledge of highway maintenance and construction practices and procedures.
- Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
- Skill operating and maintaining light and medium trucks and equipment.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor and use hand and power tools.
Additional Considerations
- Commercial Driver' License (CDL)
- Experience preparing reports and keeping records.
- Basic Tree Cutting & Chainsaw Operator
- A combination of training, experience, or education in Construction or related field desired.
- Experience using computers and software applications.
- Experience in roadway maintenance activities.
- Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Safety
- Experience in roadway maintenance and repair; work zone set-up, traffic controls and flagging to include using the MUTCD or similar regulations;
overseeing the work of others.
- Experience leading and training work crews.
- CPR with AED, Standard First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) Combined Course
- Experience applying inventory practices and procedures.
- Emergency operations experience to include snow-removal, storm damage, and accident clean-up.

This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with the job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response, and emergency operations.
Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.

VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore,
advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
VDOT is an emergency response agency, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations when services are needed.
NOTE : All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date.
You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement.
The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
