Location : Position based in New York City with regular travel within New York State (including the Capital Region, Hudson Valley, Western New York, Finger Lakes, New York City, and other parts of the state).

Position Overview

This is a temporary role providing interim coverage for the current Managing Attorney's leave, beginning as early as Nov 1, 2025 through March 31, 2026. The position will not continue beyond this timeframe.

The Interim Managing Attorney will oversee a network of legal services across several regions of New York State, focusing on newly arrived immigrant populations. In coordination with the Legal Director, the role will direct and execute limited-scope affirmative and defensive services to clients. The Interim Managing Attorney will directly manage three full-time staff (one Staff Attorney and two Paralegals) and a cohort of part-time contract legal staff, including supervising attorneys and assistants. The role reports to the Legal Director and collaborates with internal teams and external partners, including legal service providers and community-based organizations.

Limited-scope legal services are delivered via legal clinics (in-person, remote, or hybrid) and remote 1 : 1 legal assistance. The Interim Managing Attorney will ensure high-quality services and may participate in drafting procedures and documents, completing screenings, or filing applications and motions as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and supervise legal services across New York State, in consultation with the Legal Director, utilizing regional and remote support from attorneys, paralegals, and other staff.
  • Supervise provision of direct limited-scope legal services to clients, including asylum, SIJS, TPS, EOIR filings (Motions to Reopen, Change Venue, Change Hearing Format), screenings for eligibility, and general legal advice.
  • Conduct final reviews of applications for relief, especially those drafted by full-time paralegals and legal navigators as well as part-time contract attorneys.
  • Serve as a legal resource for partner organizations, clients, volunteers, and other stakeholders.
  • Exercise ethical, trauma-informed legal judgment and adhere to best practices.
  • Draft, edit, and review training materials for legal volunteers, clinic guides, resources for providers, and community-facing documents.

Data Collection

  • Oversee data collection, tracking, and reporting to ensure efficiency, accuracy, and transparency of legal service deliverables and trends.
  • Collaborate with data management personnel to design useful systems and reports on legal service provision, needs, and forecasting.
  • Ensure adherence to protocols protecting personal identifying information and data privacy; suggest policies to enhance these protections where applicable.
  • Other Responsibilities

  • Engage in strategic discussions involving litigation, special projects, and rapid-response frameworks; design and supervise systems to implement these strategic decisions.
  • Support training efforts and serve as a trainer on relevant immigration law topics where appropriate.
  • Liaise with legal and non-legal service providers, external partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Qualifications

  • Licensed attorney admitted to practice in the United States; admission to New York preferred but not required.
  • Four to seven years of relevant experience representing and working with diverse immigrant communities in affirmativ e and / or defensive immigration matters.
  • At least two years, preferably four or more, of direct supervision experience (attorneys and DOJ Accredited Representatives).
  • Experience developing strategic collaborations and events with diverse organizations; outreach experience in immigrant communities is preferred.
  • Strong skills in community organizing and advocacy with underserved and diverse communities.
  • Attention to detail in supervising and preparing applications and documents for filings with government agencies.
  • Ability to foster cohesion among immigration legal staff, including attorneys, paralegals, and support staff.
  • Adaptability to changing environments, processes, and needs; ability to juggle multiple tasks in fast-paced settings.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish required.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Legal Server, Salesforce, Google Workspace, Canva, and Microsoft Office Suite.

    This position involves extensive in-person fieldwork; when not in the field, there may be 1 remote day per week and the remaining days in the office.
