Special Education EI Classroom Teacher (Emotional Impairment)

Position Details

Job Summary :

Responsible for providing appropriate educational experiences to meet the needs of students enrolled in Special Education Programs (including cognitive, emotional, or physical disabilities).

Flint Community Schools provide a range of academic, extended services and extracurricular activities at the elementary and secondary levels to meet the needs of our students and their families.

Essential Functions :

• Design curriculum and develop instructional strategies.
• Complete and maintain necessary records.
• Evaluate students progress and prepare reports that detail progress.
• Test and evaluate students cognitive abilities.
• Plan, organize, and provide instructional services to students individually, in small groups and in resource room environment.
• Recommend changes in students school and class environments, consistent with their needs and capabilities to provide greater access to the general education curriculum.
• Communicate with parents / caregivers.
• Work cooperatively with other teachers and special education ancillary staff.
• Observe, analyze, and describe the instructional strategies being applied in an educational situation.
• Function as a team member of a team in designing appropriate educational programs for students with disabilities.
• Understand basic behavioral management concepts and demonstrate ability to develop, implement, and incorporate appropriate behavioral management techniques.
• Supervise and work with teacher aides, volunteers, and paraprofessionals.
• Adapt teaching support materials to meet student needs.
• Adapt general and special curriculum and instructional strategies to meet individual learning styles.
• Serve in a consultative capacity with individuals and groups, including teachers, parents, and students.
• Attend Multi-disciplinary Evaluation Team (MET) and Individualized Education Planning Team (IEPT) meetings when requested.

Qualifications :

Education : Shall hold a State of Michigan teaching certificate with K-12 certification. Must have endorsement in emotional impairment (SE).

Experience : Successful classroom teaching experience preferred.

Skills :

• Knowledge of disabilities and their educational implications.
• Understanding of the child study / team planning process.
• Understand the roles and organizational structures of general and special education and the part they play in providing total service for the student.
• Willingness and ability to work cooperatively on a teaching team.
