Heavy Equipment Operator – State of Oklahoma

Location : 700 S 4th., Medford, OK

Reports to : Grant County

FLSA Status : Non-exempt

Division : 4

Basic Purpose

Responsible for operating power equipment and performing related tasks in the maintenance and repair of highways.

Typical Functions

  • Operate heavy machinery such as trucks, tractors, road graders, dozers, front-end loaders, cranes, backhoes, paint machines, semi-trailers, snow removal equipment and other equipment as needed.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities.
  • Repair failures in roadway shoulders or bridge decks.
  • Repair and / or replace signs, posts, guardrails and fences.
  • Provide traffic control assistance using a stop / slow sign or flag to direct highway traffic.
  • Apply herbicide to highway right-of-ways to control weeds and other unwanted vegetation.
  • Remove debris including tires, animal carcass, spilled items and other obstacles.

Education and Experience

Level II – One year of experience operating heavy equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

  • Knowledge of safe operation and maintenance of power equipment or heavy machinery.
  • Manual labor ability; ability to maintain and operate power equipment; ability to follow instructions.
  • Special Requirements

  • Valid Oklahoma driver's license at time of employment (commercial driver's license class A or B with appropriate endorsements may be required).
  • CDL tank vehicle endorsement required for ODOT employees.
  • Drug test required prior to appointment.
  • Willing and able to perform all job-related travel normally associated with this position; willing to work hours other than on regular shifts during emergency situations; possess a telephone in residence to receive emergency on-call duty messages.
  • Regularly lift 80 pounds and occasionally lift and / or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Vision abilities required : close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
  • Position may be safety sensitive as defined by 63 O.S. 427.8.
