The Boys & Girls of the Twin Cities (BGCTC) mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

The BGCTC is committed to ongoing strategic initiatives to reduce systemic racism throughout the Twin Cities and has defined ways that the Club serves as an activator in addressing the extreme disparities for young people in the communities we serve.

In partnership with teachers / schools and parents / guardians, the Club is implementing a program model that directly improves the education and social emotional experiences of students.

The BGCTC seeks an energetic, talented, and passionate candidate to serve as a Licensed Literacy Instructor. The Literacy Instructor is a member of the Licensed Teacher Contractor Professionals team whose primary responsibility is to provide literacy instruction to eligible students from K-8 grades.

PRIMARY FUNCTION :

Offer instruction in areas of literacy and language skills using the science of reading teaching methods in a Boys & Girls Club after school setting, defined as the Reading Club’.

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities conduct FastBridge assessments with all K-8 youth in the Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer.

Student scores are used for placement in the Reading Club’ program. Using Sonday curriculum and other science of reading curricula tools, Literacy Instructors support students who are struggling with reading to develop and improve their literacy skills.

SCHEDULE :

Four days a week from 3 : 30-5 : 00 p.m during the school year and 9 a.m. to noon during the summer. Will follow the ALC calendar.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Determine individualized learning objectives and design lesson plans and appropriate learning activities.
  • Engage students in speaking, writing and reading activities to further language understanding.
  • Strengthen student skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
  • Motivate a class of students from different backgrounds and abilities.
  • Advise students on their progress and provide positive feedback.
  • Guide students through social emotional learning activities and practices.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES :

  • Bachelor's degree in education.
  • Must have a current MN teaching license that covers grades K-8 please include your file folder number in application.
  • Demonstrated understanding of child development and learning.
  • Experience with the Sonday system is a plus.
  • Strong partnership development and relationship management skills.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Candidate must be able to use Microsoft Office and have excellent skills in applicable software.
  • Bilingual (English / Spanish) preferred but not required.
